August 9: Lindsay Whalen
Connecticut Sun

Last week, we had our first two-wime winner of the weekly Cascade Dish and Assist Award so far this season, and this week, we have our second repeat honoree. Connecticut's Lindsay Whalen not only continues to lead the team with the best overall record in the league, but she is doing everything asked of her in just her second season as a professional.

In the past week, the Connecticut Sun went 2-0 with wins on the road in New York on Tuesday night and in Indiana on Saturday night (74-65 win over the Fever, 72-65 win over the Liberty). With six assists in each game, Whalen climbed back into second place in the league with 5.3 assists per game and the overall lead in total assists with 137.

But the second-year guard out of the University of Minnesota does much more than tally up those dimes. She finished with 13 points, five rebounds and two steals to go along with the six assists against the Fever. She also played in 36 out of a possible 40 minutes in each game, which is well above her average of 31.6 mpg. In the crunchtime, Sun coach Mike Thibault relies more on his star players, and Whalen is certainly that.

She is also averaging 11.2 ppg, up from 8.9 ppg a season ago. She takes the ball hard to the rack and has drawn her fair share offouls. She currently ranks eighth in the WNBA in free throws. Of course, when she is not busy passing and scoring, she even found time to update her new WNBA.com Blog this past week.
