Fever forward Tamika Catchings is this week's Cascade Dish and Assist Award winner and becomes the first frontcourt player so far in 2005 to take these honors. She leads all forwards in assists with 4.3 per contest, tied for seventh in the league.
Catchings led Indiana to an impressive 2-1 record on the road out west last week with wins over San Antonio and Phoenix, but losing on Saturday to Los Angeles, yet maintaining sole posession of second place in the Eastern Conference. In the two wins, she averaged 5.5 assists per game, shot 40 percent from three-pont range and scored in double figures. She has reached double digits in 23 of the Fever's 29 games.
She is also among the top ten in the WNBA in scoring (14.4 points per game), and rebounding (7.9 rpg), making her the only player in the top ten in all three categories. She is also first in steals per game (2.9), fifth in total minutes played and has eight double-doubles this season.
It should also come as no surprise that Catchings leads the Fever in all of these statistical categories as well. She also accomplished that feat last season as well. The 2001 University of Tennessee graduate was the 2002 Rookie of the Year and has been an All-Star in 2002, 2003 and 2005. While she has appeared in the playoffs just once, back in 2002, the Fever set a franchise record for wins with a 62-56 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday night.
