If 2004 is the Year of the Rookie in the WNBA, Connecticut Sun point guard
Lindsay Whalen is certainly doing her part.
After coming off the bench in her first professional game, Whalen, the third overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft, has started in every game since. She averaged 10.0 assists in her last three games as the Sun who went 3-0 in that stretch. Whalen currently ranks first in the WNBA with 5.5 assists per game and is fourth overall in total assists (66).
Whalen tallied ten assists on Friday night in the front end of a home-and-home series with the defending champion Detroit Shock, and followed that up with a team-record 13 dimes on Sunday in Detroit as well as her first career double-double. The 23 assists in two games and 30 assists in three games are also Sun records.
The 5-8 Minnesota native is also averaging 7.6 points per game, which is currently third among all rookies. The Sun have won four straight games and, at 8-7, are above .500 for the first time in 2004. Her teammate Nykesha Sales was also just named WNBA Player of the Week.
