Broadcasters' Predictions for 2003

ESPN analysts Doris Burke, Vera Jones and Ann Meyers and NBA TV's Mark Morgan weigh in with their predictions for the WNBA in 2003, and pretty much the only thing that's clear is that sometimes it's hard to just pick one...

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN
Yolanda Griffith
A healthy Yo reemerges as a force to be reckoned with!
Tamika Catchings is the sleeper, and the addition of Natalie Williams will free her up to do a whole lot more. It could be another big year for Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes and Chamique Holdsclaw -- all the regulars should be in contention.
(from A-Z): Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Teresa Edwards, Chamique Holdsclaw, Mwadi Mabika, Katie Smith, Sheryl Swoopes

Sheryl Swoopes

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN
LaToya Thomas... along with Helen Darling, Toya helps Cleveland battle for East supremacy.
Teresa Edwards -- the WNBA has waited a long time for the likes of a Teresa Edwards.

EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPION

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN
New York... Four Finals appearances in six years -- until someone takes it away, the East runs through Manhattan.
New York is still the team to beat as the defending Eastern Conference Champs. They will undoubtedly be strong, but keep an eye on Indiana, Washington, and if Charlotte gets some strength inside, they could contend too. It could be anybody
New York and Washington are head to head.
Cleveland Rockers

WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPION

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN
Los Angeles -- it will be a dog fight, but L.A. will find a way.
I stil think it's L.A.'s to lose, but I'm excited to see what San Antonio does. The Silver Stars will challenge and Houston will certainly make some noise. It will be interesting to see how much of a factor Cynthia Cooper is. My sleeper pick would be what Anne Donovan can pull off in Seattle.
Los Angeles Sparks, the defending champions

2003 WNBA CHAMPION

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN
Los Angeles Sparks
Being that it's before a single ball is tipped in the regular season, it's hard to bet against the defending champion L.A. Sparks; however, this is the strongest I've seen the East. Finally, because of the parity and competitiveness of the East, this may be the year that the Eastern Conference delivers the champion.
Los Angeles Sparks, until somebody beats them.

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN
Kelly Miller She's ready to play consistently at this level.
Ruth Riley, if she can get some Bill Laimbeer toughness in her.
(from A-Z): Elena Baranova, Edna Campbell, Marie Ferdinand, Tamicha Jackson, Adrienne Johsnon, Betty Lennox, Ruth Riley, Michelle Snow

Edna
Campbell

MOST IMPROVED TEAM

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN
Minnesota... Suzie McConnell Serio and Teresa Edwards are winners, period.
I love the fact that Suzie McConnell Serio has taken over in Minnesota. I love their talent, especially their scoring talent. Minnesota will make some noise.
(from A-Z): Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana, Minnesota, Sacramento
Detroit Shock

COACH OF THE YEAR

DORIS BURKE
VERA JONES
ANN MEYERS
MARK MORGAN

Suzie McConnell Serio
Look for Trudi Lacey to do some amazing things with Charlotte and for Van Chancellor to get a vote for keeping all those personalities and talent straight.
(from A-Z): Nell Fortner, Maura McHugh, Suzie McConnell Serio

Dan
Hughes
