What have you been doing since the WNBA season ended?
Bird: "I had to get my knee fixed up, so I had surgery on that – just a scope to clean it out and I've been rehabbing ever since. And other than that, just doing as much as I can for the WNBA. I'm actually coaching an eighth grade girls team, so that's pretty interesting. And I work out every day."
What sort of rehab have you been doing?
Bird: "I'm not running yet, but I'm doing everything but. I think I can run in about a week and half, two weeks, and then probably two weeks after that, so a month from now, I'll be able to cut and really play pick-up. So I probably have a month left in my rehab, if that. I'm feeling really good, so I don't see why that can't be bumped up a little bit."
And the eighth grade team you're coaching, where's that?
Bird: "It's actually in California, so I'm actually hanging out there some."
What has the coaching experience been like for you?
Bird: "It's been a great experience, a learning experience for me to coach, to be on the other side of things. When they do something well, it just makes me smile, so now I know what it feels like to be a coach."
Do you think that coaching is something you might want to do down the road?
Bird: "You never know. Everyone should watch their jobs … [laughs] No, I'm just kidding. Yeah, you never know."
Are you going to do any broadcasting during the offseason?
Bird: "If stuff comes up. I don't have anything right now, but you never know, so I always keep my options open."
Did you watch yourself on NBA Week on Wheel of Fortune?
Bird: "Yes. I've been getting heat from a lot of people that I didn't win. So next time I'm on a game show, I'd better have my game on point or else I'm in trouble."
What other game show would you want to go on?
Bird: "Nothing. Wheel of Fortune's it."
No Jeopardy?
Bird: "Jeopardy? Right. Maybe if it was Teen Jeopardy, I'd think about it."
