Pick One Challenge: August 31, 2009

By Matthew Brennan, WNBA.com

August 31, 2009 - The 2009 WNBA season and the Pick One Challenge heads into September as we enter the final two weeks of the regular season. This week features six days of games with Wednesday and Thursday featuring only one on the slate. Starting on Tuesday you will have a total of 12 players left to select for the remainder of the Pick One Challenge.

Last Week's MVP: Sue Bird, Seattle

Bird led the Storm to two wins this week and scored 21 points or better in both games, a big jump over her season average of 12.2 points per game. For the week the point guard from Long Island averaged 22.5 points and 7.5 assists as Seattle clinched a playoff berth. She leads the WNBA with 5.9 assists this season.

Rookie Watch

Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry continued to excel as August wound down, putting up two 16-point efforts. Since being held scoreless with one rebound on July 19, the top pick in April's draft is averaging 17.5 points over her last 12 games, reaching double-figures in all 12. Elsewhere around the league, Connecticut's Anete Jekabsone-Zogota has been a big producer with Ashja Jones out of the lineup. The guard from Latvia is averaging 22.0 points in her last two games as a starter for the Sun.

Last Week's Picks

My entry moved up again up to 116th place overall, so I am hoping for a top 100 finish for the season. A big game from Candice Dupree against the Liberty on Friday made up a good portion of my 92 points for the week.

This Week's Picks

Tuesday: Hamchetou Maiga-Ba, Sacramento vs. Connecticut

In her second stint with the Monarchs, the forward from Mali has seen her minutes and production rise since Kara Lawson was sidelines. Maiga-Ba is averaging 16.7 points in her last three games and will try to help Sacramento keep their very slim playoff hopes alive when the Connecticut Sun visit on Tuesday.

Thursday: Tully Bevilaqua, Indiana vs. Phoenix

Bevilaqua is averaging a career-high 6.9 points in her 11th WNBA season. Of course, she is known more for her passing skills than her scoring and has also chipped in with 3.0 assists this year. She also pulled down a season-high six rebounds in her first meeting with the Phoenix Mercury this year.

Thursday: Camille Little, Seattle at Washington

Little is having a solid year for the Storm, capped off by a new career-high of 15 rebounds on Friday. The former Tar Heel is also averaging 10.3 points over her last four games. I'll be hoping for a repeat of Tuesday's matchup against the Mystics, where Little went for ten points and seven rebounds.

Friday: Dominique Canty, Chicago vs. Washington

The veteran guard is 1-13 from the field over her last two games, but the Sky will need more from her as they try to lock down their first playoff berth in team history. Canty has started every game for the Sky this season so she does get the playing time that will let her put up some big numbers if the shots are falling.

Saturday: Penny Taylor, Phoenix vs. Atlanta

Taylor returned to the Mercury at the beginning of August and her presence makes them a big threat to win a second WNBA title in three years. She has come off the bench in her first nine games to the tune of 10.7 points per game. She averaged 17.8 points two years ago as a starter, so she is liable to have a big game over the last two weeks of the season if she gets the playing time.

Sunday: Nakia Sanford, Washington at Indiana

Sanford is averaging 1.3 points in three games against the Fever this season. I'll be looking for an increase in her average after another meeting with Indiana on Sunday. She has reached double-figures in points six time in 2009, most recently when she scored 12 against Detroit on August 11.
