July 20, 2009 - The 2009 WNBA season and the Pick One Challenge makes it's way towards this weekend's All-Star break. There are only four days of games this week with Tuesday featuring only one game. Heading into Tuesday's action you will have 44 players left to choose for the 2009 season.
Last Week's MVP: Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars
Hammon had an outstanding week for San Antonio, averaging 22.3 points over three games. The star guard is currently third among all WNBA players with a PRA (points+rebounds+assists) of 27.6 per game. Her 19.6 points per game would be a career high if the season ended today. She will only be in action once this week, when the Silver Stars take on Indiana on Thursday afternoon.
Rookie Watch
Phoenix's DeWanna Bonner and Detroit's Shavonte Zellousare the only rookies in the top 50 in PRA. They are also the only rookies averaging in double-figure scoring. Bonner has to be considered the main candidate for Rookie of the Year, as she currently leads all first-year players in both scoring and rebounding. Second overall pick Marissa Coleman looked like she would challenge Bonner as the league's top rookie before missing time with an injury, but is only averaging 4.5 points in her first four games since returning. By comparison, last season four rookies finished in the top 50 in the league in PRA, including two (Candace Parker and Candice Wiggins) in the top 25.
Last Week's Picks
I had a good week with all five of my picks recording 20 or higher, extending my streak in that category to 13 games. My entry was is in 74th place overall heading into Sunday's game, up 26 spots from last week. Connecticut's Asjha Jones started the week off strong with 24 points, four rebounds, and five assists on Tuesday against the Sparks.

Tuesday: Lindsey Harding, Washington vs. Indiana
A change of address to our nation's capitol has done Harding a lot of good, as she is in line to have her best WNBA season yet. The former Duke star is third in the league with 5.2 assists and also contributes 13.2 points per game. She is coming off of one of her best games of the season, scoring 23 points with seven rebounds and five assists in a win over the Liberty on Saturday.
Wednesday: Renee Montgomery, Minnesota at Phoenix
Montgomer has stuggled shooting the ball lately, but a matchup with the Mercury could help her get back on the right track. The first-round pick scored 15 points in only 21 minutes in her last meeting with Phoenix. The oppopent along with her rookie status should make her a good choice on Wednesday night.
Friday: Loree Moore, New York vs. Sacramento
Moore isn't a big scorer, but she rebounds and passes well enough for her to be a solid choice for Friday night. Sacramento gives up the second most assists per game in the WNBA (18.6), so this should be a good spot for her to set up her teammates for some baskets.
Saturday: Essence Carson, New York vs. Phoenix
In the middle of her second WNBA season. Carson has been a solid performer for the Liberty, and has scored in double-figures in four of her last five games. She scored a season-high 18 points against Phoenix in the first meeting between the teams this season, so I will be hoping for something similiar this Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
