Pick One Challenge Preview: June 22, 2009

By Matthew Brennan, WNBA.com

June 22, 2009 - The 2009 WNBA season and the Pick One Challenge enters its third full week. There are five days of games this week and Thursday features only one game. So far heading into Monday's action you will have 66 players left to choose for the 2009 season.

Last Week's MVP: Lauren Jackson, Seattle Storm

The superstar from Australia was ultra-consistent last week, posting two excellent performances. She scored 26 points with six rebounds on Friday, and then returned to action on Sunday with 25 points, eight rebounds, and an assist. Both games were Seattle victories. Jackson now leads all WNBA players with a 30.9 PRA and also leads the league in scoring with 23.4 points per game.

Injury Report

Three top Pick One choices were sidelined by injury this week. Minnesota's Seimone Augustus, who looked to be on her way to an MVP-caliber season, will miss the rest of 2009 with a torn ACL. Washington's Marissa Coleman, who was ranked second in PRA among all rookies, will also be out for approximately four-to-six weeks with a high ankle sprain. Lisa Leslie will also miss an estimated five games with a sprained right knee suffered on Friday night.

Rookie Watch

Phoenix's DeWanna Bonner continued her strong play this week and leads all rookies with a 20.5 PRA. With Coleman sidelined, that leaves Bonner as the only active rookie currently in the WNBA's top 50. Only four other rookies are even averging double-figures in PRA, with Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry, Detroit's Shavonte Zellous, Indiana's Briann January and Chicago's Kristi Toliver your best bets if you are looking to capitalize on doubling your score with a rookie.

Last Week's Picks

My entry has crept up to the 92nd percentile and I am ranked in 8th place in the Beat The Guru League. Choosing rookie sensation DeWanna Bonner paid off when she added 64 points to my total on Wednesday night. I would have liked to get more production from Lindsay Whalen, who scored five points with three rebounds and six assists on Friday night. She has actually been held under double-figure scoring in her last three games. I also had to make a switch on Saturday from the injured Marrisa Coleman to her teammate Crystal Langhorne. Langhorne had a solid game with 14 points and six rebounds.

This Week's Picks

Tuesday: Candice Wiggins, Minnesota vs. New York

Candice Wiggins is mired in a shooting slump (11-36 in her last four games) but a player with her talent has to start producing sooner or later. The Lynx will need a big year from Wiggins with Augustus on the sidelines, and they will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak when the Liberty visit on Tuesday night.

Wednesday: Alana Beard, Washington vs. Phoenix

Alana Beard has already posted some huge games in 2009 and she should be in line for another when the Mystics take on Phoenix, who gives up the most points in the WNBA. Beard was tied for sixth in the league with a 26.0 PRA heading into Sunday's action. She is also fourth in scoring with 20.0 points and will be looking to averaged 20 or better in a season for the first time in her career.

Friday: Shameka Christon, New York vs. Indiana

Shameka Christon is heating up with the summer weather, as he is now averaging 17.6 points over her last three games. She recorded new season highs in points and assists against San Antonio on Friday and pulled down a season high seven rebounds in Sunday's win over Atlanta. If the Liberty can get past Minnesota on Tuesday then they will be looking for their fourth straight win when Indiana visits the Garden on Friday night.

Saturday: Kristi Toliver, Chicago vs. Washington

The third pick in this year's draft, Kristi Toliver got off to a slow start to her rookie season but is starting to pick it up. The guard from Maryland is averaging 13.5 points and shooting 10-19 from the field over her last two games. I am expecting her to keep playing a bigger role in Chicago as the season moves forward.

Sunday: Shavonte Zellous, Detroit vs. Sacramento

The 11th overall choice in April's draft, Shavonte Zellous has provided some scoring and rebounding early in her rookie season for the Detroit Shock. With a new head coach in place in Detroit, Zellous came off the bench for the first time on Sunday and responded with a new career high of 13 points. I am looking for another solid game from Zellous on Sunday as the Shock look to pick up a home win against Sacramento.
