WNBA Pick One Challenge Preview: September 1, 2008

By Matthew Brennan, WNBA.com

September 1, 2008 - The 2008 WNBA season and the Pick One Challenge will now enter the home stretch after last week's return from the Olympic break. There are two full weeks remaining in the 2008 season so let's check out the picks for this week, which features at least one game on the schedule for all seven days.

Last Week's MVP: Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Sky

After an impressive showing for Team USA in Beijing, Fowles returned to the Sky and racked up three straight double doubles last week. Over the three games Fowles averaged 13.3 points and 11.6 rebounds while leading Chicago to three straight wins. Chicago is still in the hunt for their first playoff berth so expect Fowles to play a big role over the final two weeks of her rookie season.

Rookie Watch

Candace Parker got right back to business for the Sparks after returning from China with a gold medal, posting a 19 point, 15 rebound outing against San Antonio on Saturday. Parker is currently three tenths of a point behind Diana Taurasi for the league lead in PRA (points+rebounds+assists per game) with a 31.7 average. Her rookie status means that you will get an averaged of 64 points added to your entry's total if you select Parker on any given night. Candice Wiggins is the only other rookie in the WNBA's top 25, checking in at 19th overall with a 23.2 PRA.

Last Week's Picks

My entry remained in the 95th percentile, dropping slightly to 322nd overall heading into Sunday's action. Sacramento's rookie Laura Harper had a solid game with eight points and seven rebounds on Saturday night, giving me 30 points for the day.

This Week's Picks

Monday: Marie Ferdinand-Harris, Los Angeles vs. Minnesota

Marie Ferdinand-Harris is looking to get back to a stretch in late July where she scored in double-figures for four straight games. She tallied 12 points on 5-8 shooting in her first meeting with the Lynx earlier this season.

Tuesday: Tamika Catchings, Indiana vs. Washington

Tamika Catchings has struggled with her shooting at times this season, but her excellent all-around game can still make her a valuable selection in the Pick One Challenge. She is coming off of a 23 point, seven rebound, three assist outing on Saturday against Atlanta. Catchings' top two scoring performances of the season have come over her last three games.

Wednesday: Kelly Miller, Phoenix vs. Minnesota

Kelly Miller has started 28 games for the Mercury this season, averaging 8.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. Her first game back from the Olympic break was fairly true to form, as Miller scored seven points with six rebounds and five assists in a loss to San Antonio. The Mercury will meet the Lynx on Wednesday and look to avenge a 94-83 loss early in the season.

Thursday: Sylvia Fowles, Chicago vs. Seattle

Sylvia Fowles has been on a hot streak since dominating opponents at the Olympics, and she will look to compile her fourth straight double-double. Fowles made her WNBA debut against the Storm in May and was handicapped by foul trouble, picking up six in 15 minutes. In her limited time on the floor she managed six points and seven rebounds, so look for a big game from the former LSU standout on Thursday if she can avoid the fouls.

Friday: Tiffany Jackson, New York vs. Atlanta

Tiffany Jackson has improved her numbers across the board in her second WNBA season, increasing her scoring from 5.1 points to 8.3 points for the Liberty. The former Texas star has struggled against Atlanta this season (3.0 points in two games) but will be looking for improvement when the Dream visit Madison Square Garden on Friday. Note: Jackson's selection will be replaced by Essence Carson due to injury.

Saturday: Sancho Lyttle, Houston vs. Los Angeles

Sancho Lyttle is in the middle of her best WNBA season in her fourth year with the Comets, averaging 8.2 points and 6.2 rebounds. Lyttle, who also leads the WNBA in field-goal percentage (.583), got off to a strong start after the break with ten points and ten boards against Seattle on Saturday. She scored 12 points with two rebounds earlier this year against Saturday's foe, the Los Angeles Sparks.

Sunday: Candice Dupree, Chicago vs. New York

Candice Dupree continues to establish herself as one of the WNBA's elite players and is looking to make her first playoff appearance in her third WNBA season. After struggling against Washington on Friday, Dupree bounced back with 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in an overtime triumph over Detroit on Sunday night. Dupree and the Sky, riding a three-game winning streak, will play three times this week ending with a trip to New York on Sunday afternoon.
