WNBA Pick One Challenge Preview: July 14, 2008

By Matthew Brennan, WNBA.com

July 14, 2008 - The 2008 WNBA season and the Pick One Challenge are in full swing as we move throught the month of July. Here is the preview for this week's action, which features at least one WNBA game every day.

Last Week's MVP: Lindsay Whalen, Connecticut Sun

Whalen's Sun team was unable to come up with a win this week, but the point guard nearly posted two triple-doubles as she did just about everything for her team. Whalen recorded a 20-point, eight-assist, seven-rebound game on Tuesday before coming back on Sunday to tie her career high with 33 points, along with eight rebounds and six assists. Going into Sunday's game Whalen ranked 11th in the WNBA with a PRA of 26.2.

Rookie Watch

Candace Parker posted her best game of the season last week when she exploded for 40 points and 16 rebounds in a win over Houston. Parker has been limited to "only" 14 points in her last two games since, but she dominates all rookies and is tied for the league lead with a 31.9 PRA. Yes, that means on an average night, Parker will add 64 points to your Pick One entry if you select her. Parker will be in action this week against both Houston and Phoenix, two teams that she scored over 30 points on this season.

Minnesota's Nicky Anosike has been playing well recently, scoring in double-figures in her last three games. She ranks only behind Parker, teammate Candice Wiggins, and the sidelined Sylvia Fowles with a PRA of 19.0. Anosike and the Lynx will hit the road to visit the Texas teams this week.

Last Week's Picks

My entry moved slighty up from the 82nd to the 84th percentile as my picks recorded a total of 123 points for the week. Tina Thompson got the week off to a great start with 23 points and seven rebounds on Tuesday night.

This Week's Picks

Monday: Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles vs. San Antonio

Lisa Leslie has not missed a beat after sitting out last season, as she is posting 16.0 points and 9.3 rebounds in her 11th campaign with the Sparks. Leslie leads the WNBA with ten double-doubles, and has now gone three games without posting one which is her longest stretch of the season. She and the Sparks will look to avenge their previous loss to the Silver Stars this season when they host San Antonio on Monday.

Tuesday: Ann Wauters, San Antonio vs. Phoenix

Ann Wauters returned from a year playing overseas and has been a great addition to the Silver Stars' lineup, averaging 14.8 points and ranking seventh in the WNBA with 7.5 rebounds. Wauters turned in her best game of the season last Thursday with 23 points and 11 rebounds against Chicago, and will look to repeat that effort on Tuesday against the fast-paced Phoenix Mercury.

Wednesday: Kara Braxton, Detroit vs. Chicago

Kara Braxton is on pace for the best scoring season of the WNBA career, averaging 8.9 points. Braxton's rebounding numbers have taken a slight dip from last season but she is still one of the top players coming off the bench in the WNBA right now. She scored nine points and pulled down six boards in her last meeting with Chicago a few weeks ago.

Thursday: Candace Parker, Los Angeles vs. Parker

Quite simply, Candace Parker has terrorized the Phoenix Mercury this season. The MVP candidate is averaging 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 6.6 assists in three games against the Mercury in her rookie year. This will be the final meeting between the teams this season so take advantage of the matchup if you haven't already selected Parker.

Friday: Ticha Penicheiro, Sacramento vs. Atlanta

Ticha Penicheiro is having her best offensive WNBA season ever, averaging a career-high 10.4 points in her 11th campaign. Of course, Penicheiro is know for her passing as well, and the league's all-time leader is dishing out 5.4 this year, which would be her best total since 2003. The Monarchs will face Atlanta on Friday night, and will look to take advantage of a Dream defense that is surrendering 85.5 points per game.

Saturday: Le'coe Willingham, Phoenix vs. Atlanta

Le'coe Willingham is receiving the most playing time in her five-year career and the numbers reflect it with 9.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. The former Auburn star went for 14 points and nine rebounds in the first meeting with the Atlanta Dream and will look to match or better those total on Saturday in the Valley of the Sun.

Sunday: Amber Holt, Connecticut vs. Chicago

Amber Holt has been having a solid rookie season for the Sun, averaging 6.2 points and 3.1 rebounds while starting all 20 games. Holt scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in her first matchup with Chicago, which would be good news if she can come close to that effort on Sunday. Going into Sunday she ranked ninth among rookies with a PRA of 11.2, which adds up to 22 points for your entry on her average night.
