WNBA Pick One Outlook: June 23, 2008

By Matthew Brennan, WNBA.com

June 16, 2008 - The 2008 WNBA season and the Pick One Challenge move into the final week of June. Here is a look at what went down last week and what to look forward to this week, which features five days with at least one game on the schedule.

Last Week's MVP: Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars

Hammon averaged 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 7.0 in two games for the Silver Stars, who have now won five straight games to move into second place in the Western Conference. She will need some more efforts similiar to her last two games in order to move her scoring averaged up towards last season's 18.8 mark, but expect Hammon to continue to put forth big numbers as she gets ready for Beijing and then a run to the playoffs for the Silver Stars.

Rookie Watch

Candace Parker remains on top of the rankings for rookies, and third overall, with a combined scoring, rebounding and assists average of 30.4. She posted one of her best overall games of the season on Friday with 27 points and nine rebounds. Minnesota's Candice Wiggins is threatening to move into the overall top ten in the WNBA, as she currently ranks thirteenth with a PRA of 25.0.

The top mover on the rookie front this week is Atlanta's Tamera Young, who has moved into the top five among rookies and the top 50 overall with an average of 15.3 per game. The Dream's first round pick out of James Madison, Young has reached double-figures in rebounding in three of her last four games. She is receiving plenty of court time for the expansion dream, so she should be a solid choice throughout the rest of the season as she adjusts to the WNBA's level of play.

Last Week's Picks

My entry remained steady in the 82nd percentile, as I started the week of strong with a double-double from Michelle Snow but saw single-digits totals on both Saturday and Sunday.

This Week's Picks

Tuesday: Erin Buescher, San Antonio vs. Houston

Erin Buescher hasn't scored in double-figures in five straight games, but she scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in her last meeting with the Comets on June 3. I'm looking for her to have a breakout game here as the Silver Stars go for six straight wins.

Thursday: Dominique Canty, Chicago vs. Phoenix

Dominique Canty and the Sky will try to snap a four-game losing streak when they host the struggling Mercury on Thursday. The veteran guard is averaging 7.9 points and 2.2 rebounds for Chicago in her ninth WNBA season. She will look to score in double-figures for the first time in five games.

Friday: Jolene Anderson, Connecticut vs. Atlanta

Jolene Anderson is having a solid rookie season for the Sun, averaging 6.4 points and and 3.4 rebounds in her first 13 games. She has raised her average to 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds over her last two games and will look for her first career double-double against the Dream in Friday. Anderson posted eight points and seven rebounds against Atlanta on May 17.

Saturday: Tasha Humphrey, Detroit vs. Chicago

Tasha Humphrey got off to a slow start to her rookie season but has emerged as big part of the Shock frontcourt over the past two weeks. The first-round pick from Georgia is averaging 18.0 points and 10.0 rebounds over her last three games, inlcuding a 28-point effort on June 14 against the Mercury. Humphrey is also connecting on .556 (26-47) of her field-goal attempts in her first WNBA season. She should be a threat to rank among the top rookies now that she is established in Detroit's rotation.

Sunday: Sue Bird, Seattle vs. Washington

Sue Bird has been one of the WNBA's best point guards throughout her career, and she is leading the league with 6.1 assists in her sixth WNBA season. Bird is also posting 12.0 points and 2.9 rebounds this season for the Storm, who are off to an 8-6 start. Seattle will host Washington on Sunday and look to build on their 7-1 record in the Emerald City. Bird is coming off one of her best games of the season with 17 points, five assists, and five rebounds on Friday against the Fever.
