Pick One Challenge Outlook: June 4

by Matthew Brennan, WNBA.com

June 3, 2007 - The 2007 WNBA season is entering its second month but there is still a long way to go in the Pick One Challenge. Starting with Tuesday's slate there will be 58 days of games remaining, so you still have 58 WNBA players to choose for you entry. Right now in the PRA (points-rebounds-assists) standings, it's no surprise as Lauren Jackson (34.5), Tamika Catchings (31.0), and Tina Thompson (29.0) make up the top three.

Last Week's MVP: Becky Hammon, San Antonio Silver Stars

The Liberty's Becky Hammon is enjoying the change of scenery with a scorching start to her first season with the Silver Stars. Hammon is tied for sixth in the league with a 27.2 PRA and is averaging what would be a career high in both scoring (19.3 ppg) and assists (5.0 apg) Hammon has never averaged more than 14.7 ppg over a full season, so she is in for a monster campaign if she can keep up her current scoring pace.

Rookie Watch

As you should know by now, rookies obtain double points for your entry, so keep an eye on which first-year players are making some noise. Two rookies who have caught my eye this week are Lindsey Harding and Marta Fernandez. These rookie point guards are two of only three rookies who are currently averaging in double-figure scoring and Fernandez and Harding are ranked third and 11th respectively in assists per game. A 10-point game by a rookie is equivalent to a 20-point outing by a veteran so don't hesitate to use them if they are seeing enough playing time.

Last Week's Picks

My entry is moving on up the rankings, as my selections topped the 20 mark in PRA in five out of six games over the week. Nykesha Sales provided my top game of the week on Saturday, posting a PRA of 29 (18 points, seven rebounds, four assists) and helping me move from the 46th percentile to the 64th percentile of all Pick One entries. Hopefully the upcoming week will see my entry continue to move up the list.

Tuesday: Seimone Augustus, Minnesota at Phoenix

Seimone Augustus and the Lynx are still looking for their first win this season, but the 2006 number-one pick is off to another hot start in her second WNBA campaign. Augustus is tied for the league lead with 22.5 points and ranks sixth amongst all players with a PRA of 27.2. She should be in line for a big game against the Mercury and their fast-paced style on Tuesday night. Tune in to watch Augustus take on Phoenix at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Wednesday: Tamika Catchings, Indiana vs. Houston

Tamika Catchings is the kind of player that the Pick One Challenge is made for. Points, rebounds, assists, she can do it all for the Fever. Catchings, who trails only Lauren Jackson in PRA this season, will take on a Houston Comets team that has had trouble stopping anyone in the early going (league worst 88.0 points allowed per game).

Thursday: Nicole Powell, Sacramento vs. Seattle

Nicole Powell is leading the Monarchs with a 19.6 PRA and had her best game of the season on Saturday, scoring 19 points in a win over the Sparks. Any number of Monarchs can step up and have a good game, but it looks like Powell is your best bet in terms of consistent production.

Friday: Marta Fernandez, Los Angeles vs. Minnesota

Marta Fernandez has emerged as a contributor for the Sparks at point guard with Temeka Johnson sidelined. Fernandez is a 26 year-old rookie who has plenty of international experience, and she is making an impact early in her WNBA career while ranking third in the league with 5.25 assists.

Saturday: Becky Hammon, San Antonio vs. Chicago

Becky Hammon and the Silver Stars will host the Sky on Saturday. With Hammon putting up outstanding numbers, it makes sense to select her as she will likely be matched up against a rookie in Armintie Price. You can check out this game at 8 p.m. ET on NBA TV.

Sunday: Tammy Sutton-Brown, Indiana vs. New York

Tammy Sutton-Brown has reached double-figures in scoring in the first three Fever games this season. Indiana will visit the Liberty in what could be a battle for first place in the Eastern Conference. The two teams are a combined 8-0 as of Sunday night.
