Dream to Conclude Heritage Fridays Series Aug. 15 With Caribbean Night
Caribbean Night will be in recognition of Dream forward/center Aneika Henry and forward Sancho Lyttle, who were born in Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, respectively.
Like each Heritage Fridays game, Caribbean Night will include entertainment and interactive elements that are specific to the culture being recognized during that game. In addition, the first 2,000 fans will receive Heritage Series collectors wristbands in Caribbean colors branded with logos and flags representing the Dream, Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Dream’s first three Heritage Fridays games were Native American Night on May 30, Brazilian Night on June 13 and French Night on July 25.
Native American Night was held in honor of rookie guard Shoni Schimmel, who grew up on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon. Centers Erika de Souza and Nadia Colhado, who played on Brazil’s Olympic team in 2012, were the focal point of Brazilian Night, and French Night celebrated point guard Céline Dumerc, who captained the French National team to the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics.
The Dream has one of the most culturally diverse team in the WNBA, as six of the league’s 18 foreign-born players are on Atlanta’s roster. In addition to those already listed, guard Matee Ajavon is a native of Liberia, and the team began the season with rookie guard Inga Orekhova, who was born in the Ukraine and raised in Austria.
The three-time Eastern Conference Champion Atlanta Dream is in its seventh season in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Dream has qualified for the playoffs in each of the past six seasons, including conference titles in 2013, 2011 and 2010.
