The Atlanta Dream take on the Los Angeles Sparks in the second game of Dream Opening Weekend at Philips Arena. Tonight’s game will be the first regular-season matchup between the two teams. They previously faced off in a pre-season matchup on May 3, 2008 which the Sparks won 86-80.
The Sparks are off to a 1-0 start, beginning the season with a 99-94 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. In her regular season debut, rookie sensation Candace Parker nearly notched a triple double, finishing with 34 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Center Lisa Leslie, returning to the league this year after missing last season on maternity leave, finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
In addition to the return of Leslie and the addition of Parker, the Sparks also acquired forward Delisha Milton-Jones in a trade with the Washington Mystics. Milton-Jones was originally drafted by the Sparks in 1999 and helped the team to back-to-back championships in 2001 and 2002. Milton-Jones scored 10 points and pulled down 9 boards in the Sparks opening game.
The Sparks have quite a few local ties to Georgia with two former Lady Bulldogs on the roster-- guard Kiesha Brown and forward Christi Thomas. Sparks forward Jessica Moore and the Dream’s Ann Strother were also teammates at the University of Connecticut.
