Game Preview: Dream vs. Mercury (07/01/08)
TV: ESPN2 Radio: 1230 / 1340 AM
The Dream are preparing for their national television debut as they host Diana Taurasi and the defending WNBA Champions, the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, July 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Philips Arena.
Tuesday’s game will be a battle of the backcourts, as both teams have relied heavily on their perimeter players so far this season. One of the bright spots for the Dream has been the emergence of second year playmaker Ivory Latta, who is playing the best basketball of her young career. Latta is consistently scoring in double digits for the Dream and is among the league leaders in assists per game and assist to turnover ratio. Latta is joined in the backcourt by the team’s leading scorer, Betty Lennox, and rookie Tamera Young who has emerged as the one of the team’s top rebounders and their defensive stopper.
The Dream will have to slow down a Phoenix team that loves to get up and down the floor and is among the top scoring teams in the league. A large part of that scoring comes from the Phoenix backcourt, where Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter are both averaging over 20 points per game. Taurasi and Pondexter were both recently named to the United States 2008 Olympic Team which will contend for gold this summer in Beijing. After getting off to a slow start in 2008, the defending champions are right back in the mix of things.
This is a game you will not want to miss! The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2, so it’s time for Dream fans to show the nation why Atlanta fans are the best in the league! Come celebrate Independence Week with the Dream as the team hosts three consecutive home games—July 1 vs. Phoenix, July 3 vs. Houston, and July 5 vs. Chicago.
