The Atlanta Dream hit the road tonight for an Eastern Conference matchup with the Washington Mystics. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm at the Verizon Center.
The Dream (0-3) are looking for their first win of the season after dropping two games this weekend to the Detroit Shock and Los Angeles Sparks. One bright spot for the Dream has been the play of Brazilian forward/center Erika De Souza. In her Atlanta debut on May 23 vs. Detroit, De Souza came off the bench to grab a WNBA season-high 18 rebounds, shattering her personal best of nine boards. On the season, De Souza is averaging a double-double with 10.5 points and 12 rebounds per game.
The Dream will need to use their depth and balanced scoring attack against the Mystics. Three Dream players are averaging double-digits on the season: De Souza (10.5 ppg), guard Betty Lennox (14 ppg) and guard Iziane Castro Marques (10 ppg). The team is looking for Castro Marques to continue her aggressive play following her season-high 17 points against Los Angeles on May 25.
The Mystics (1-2) are coming off a 69-66 win against the Houston Comets on May 25. Washington has been led by the combination of guard Alana Beard and forward/center Taj McWilliams-Franklin. Beard is averaging 18 points, 2.5 assists and two steals per game. On Sunday against Houston, she scored 16 points, including two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to seal the win for the Mystics. McWilliams-Franklin, acquired this season from the Los Angeles Sparks, is close to averaging a double-double with 13.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Against the New York Liberty, she scored a game-high 26 points.
Fans can tune into 1230/1340 AM to catch all the action. The Dream’s next opponent is the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday, June 3 at Philips Arena.
