Analysis
Make no mistake: the Shock are loaded. On the heels of its third title in franchise history, Detroit is teeming with talent, experience, balance and superb coaching. Last year's midseason acquisition of Taj McWilliams-Franklin vaulted them to the 2008 WNBA Finals, which they won by sweeping the San Antonio Silver Stars. All the key parts are back for another go in 2009 and that includes rebounding machine Cheryl Ford, who watched Detroit's domination of San Antonio from the sidelines because of a season-ending injury suffered in July. The Shock will likely enter 2009 as favorites to repeat as champions, which means there aren't too many holes to fill. That said, a team with aging veterans could always stand to get younger and more athletic (it helped last year with Alexis Hornbuckle), and it would nice if the Shock could find someone to relieve some of Katie Smith's point guard duties so she could play off the ball a little more.
