Player Ratings

TAMPA , April 8, 2008 - Let's face it, WNBA teams are no help when trying to get the skinny on the top prospects. Sure, you'll get a few "she's a good player" responses, but nothing of any substance for the simple fact that they don't want to show their hand and hint at which players they are leaning towards in the 2008 WNBA Draft. We expected that coming down here to Tampa and nothing has happened to deviate from it.

For that reason, we went to the players themselves at Pre-Draft Camp, asking them for the best seniors they've played against and just the best they've seen in action. To no one's surprise the names of Candace Parker, Sylvia Fowles and Candice Wiggins came up often, to the point where their peers felt they didn't even need to explain their choices. But that's not to say that there weren't a few shout-outs for some of the lesser-know talents who could hear their names called on Wednesday.

UCLA C Lindsey Pluimer:

“I’d have to go with Candice Wiggins and Candace Parker. We played Tennessee at home and even though she didn’t shoot well, Parker still got it done. She’s very athletic and obviously very versatile too. And Candice Wiggins is just a fighter. We played against her three times this year and she’ll do whatever it takes.

Essence Carson is very talented, very athletic and gets it done.”

James Madison G Tamera Young:

Marcedes Walker. I played against her twice, last year and this year. I played against Krystal Vaughn in our conference. She’s real good. Kimberly Beck and Sarah-Jo Lawrence of George Washington were also tough. And then there’s Maryland’s Laura Harper and Crystal Langhorne.

“The rest I never played against, but I watched Charel Allen play. She was good when I watched her. Candace Parker, of course.”

Notre Dame G Charel Allen:

“Candace Parker. We just lost (to Tennessee) and she’s a great player. I could say I played against Essence Carson (of Rutgers) because she guarded me. She’s a great player, along with Matee (Ajavon). We play in the Big East so we play against some really good competition.”

St. John’s G Kia Wright:

(Olayinka) Sanni from West Virginia. She’s a problem. I didn’t have to guard her, but I felt bad for my teammates. I like her game a lot. Essence Carson had a good tournament and she’s really improved, and I’m proud of what she’s done. Matee (Ajavon) also. Marcedes Walker (may surprise some people). She has a big heart and she hates to lose.”

Hartford F/C Danielle Hood:

Ketia Swanier. I didn’t play against her personally, but she was good. She’s a hard person to guard because she’s so quick.

"Candace Parker is an amazing player."

VCU F Krystal Vaughn:

“In the CAA tournament I played against Tamera Young. She was one of the toughest guards in our conference. She was the best scorer in the CAA this year. Even though we defeated them three times she was one of the toughest people to play against.”

Coppin State G Shalamar Oakley:

“The guard Adrianne Ross from TCU was really good. Rachel Butler’s in our conference and she’s a good shooter. I played against the West Virginia guards (Meg Bulger and LaQuita Owens) and they were good too.

“I love Tasha Humphrey, the big forward from Georgia. I watched her play a lot. I’ve seen Tamera Young from James Madison play a couple times. I think she’s a good player. Sharnee’ Zoll. She’s from Jersey too so I played with her a little bit and watched her play in Jersey.”

Texas A&M G A’Quonesia Franklin:

“I would have to say Candace Parker. Her shoulder was popping out of the socket against us and she was still playing. So I would have to say Candace.”

“And Candice Wiggins. Just seeing her go out and get 40 in two games straight. I played a little bit against her in the USA trials, but I haven’t played her in college.”

Kentucky G Samantha Mahoney:

“Parker, of course. Fowles also, although I didn’t personally guard either. I would have to go with those two.”

Kentucky C Sarah Elliott:

“Sylvia Fowles! Guarding her personally, I know I cannot stop her. She’s just so dominant, but I’ve always done my best to contain her and I feel like I’ve done it. I’m very proud about doing that. But she’s just a dominant player and you just have to give that girl props (laughs). There’s no doubt about it.

"I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t know many people outside the SEC. I really don’t. That’s how I know Fowles and Tasha Humphrey. She’s killer too.”

Idaho State C Natalie Doma:

“Candice Wiggins. We played Stanford in the NCAA Tournament and she definitely is an amazing player. And Candace Parker and Sylvia Fowles are awesome players.”

Wisconsin G Jolene Anderson:

“It’s tough because we didn’t make the NCAA Tournament, but in the Big Ten conference it’s probably Marscilla Packer. She’s probably the toughest one that I played against for four years.”

“Crystal Langhorne has to be up there as one of the top ones I’ve watched or played with at USA Basketball. She’s probably the top one.”

Georgia F Tasha Humphrey:

“Gosh, who HAVEN’T I played against? I played against Sylvia, I played against Candace, I played against (North Carolina's) Erlana (Larkins), I played against Alexis Hornbuckle, I played against everybody. I think there’s really something special about our class, and I guess it’s the depth. There are so many great players, there are so many talented athletes in this group.

“And with us playing in the SEC, we saw all kinds of terrific competition night in and night out. And that’s one of the cool things about the NCAA’s. You play teams you haven’t already played three times during the season.

“I think there are a lot of players who have the chance to be really exceptional pros, but there’s just something about Sylvia Fowles. She does something every game that really puts me in awe. She’s dominating right now… and once she actually gets it in her head that nobody can stop her? Wow… nobody’s gonna stop her! The athleticism she brings and the finesse she has around the basket… it’s so impressive. It’s not always fun to play against, believe me… haha. But when I’m watching, I’m gonna go sit and watch her play all day.”

Wisconsin G Janese Banks:

“Sharnee’ Zoll is a great player and in our conference there’s Marscilla Packer. And there’s some of the great players I played against last year from Kentucky, and Crystal Kelly.”

“I’m sure the all-time favorites are Candace and Sylvia. And I’ve watched Langhorne and Harper for so long. They’re just phenomenal post players. But I think Candace and Sylvia would be the best.”

Texas A&M F Morenike Atunrase:

“Hornbuckle is a great player. I would say her. She was at my position. That’s who I held when we played them, so I would have to say Hornbuckle.”

“I like Erlana Larkins’ game. I love her toughness and her all-around game, how she can step out and guard a two if she had to. Adrianne Ross is a great player. She overcame an injury one year and she put herself back on the map. I played against her also.”

Colorado C Jackie McFarland:

“Tasha Humphrey, I’ve watched her play. I think she’s a good player. I haven’t played against her. Sarah-Jo Lawrence played with me in Taiwan. We went and played at the Jones Cup. She’s a great player. She’s so athletic and very, very defensively-minded. I admire her on defense. Adrianne Ross we just played against. She’s a very quick player. I like the way she plays. I’ve say the best player I’ve played against and seen would be Angela Tisdale. She’s a great leader for her team and can score in a bunch of different ways.”

“Candace Parker is someone I’d love to play against, and to play with too.”

N.C. State F Khadijah Whittington:

“I’d definitely say Erlana Larkins. She was definitely one of the best players I played against. Being from the ACC, Crystal Langhorne is another one.”

“As for players I haven't played against, there's Candace Parker. I like the way Candice Wiggins plays. I really haven’t seen too much of Sylvia Fowles, but from what I hear she’s really good.”

West Virginia C Olayinka Sanni:

“By far the top players I’ve played against are Sylvia Fowles and Candace Parker. They’re phenomenal basketball players and they’re just bringing upside for women’s basketball and I think that’s really good for us. They put in the work and brought it to another level for women’s basketball.”
