CLEVELAND, April 1, 2007 — Bernice Mosby isn't your average college senior. The Brooksville, Fla., native had an impressive 2 1/2-season run at the University of Florida, but she was suspended, then dismissed completely from the team in 2005. After transferring to Baylor, she sat out the requisite season, then came back in 2006-07 to post the best all-around season of her career, leading the Lady Bears to a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where they eventually fell to North Carolina State in the second round.
Mosby was one of the college prospects invited to the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp, where she spoke with WNBA.com's Adam Hirshfield.
Q. You didn't have the prototypical college experience. How would you characterize
your college basketball career?
Mosby: "I would call my college experience "Trials, Tribulations
and Happiness." Starting out in college very young-minded, there were a
lot of problems back home and I made a lot of mistakes. But I grew out of that
phase and grew as a woman and got through my trials and tribulations and found
happiness."
Q. What strengths and qualities do you think you'll bring to the WNBA team
that drafts you?
Mosby: "I think my biggest strength is that as a power forward, I can
bring the ball up the court. I can handle the ball, I'm quick and I have good
elevation on my shot. Some post players can't move laterally all that well,
and I feel like I have an advantage because I can get around them more quickly."
Q. What skills do you feel you still need to improve or work on at the next
level?
Mosby: "I need to work on my ball-handling. In order to be a great
player, there's always something you need to improve on each and every day.
Nobody's perfect, and you have to work to be the best. People say, 'Oh, you're
a great player.' But I'm still trying to reach the potential I know I have."
Q. What do you expect some of the biggest challenges/adjustments to be at
the next level?
Mosby: "I think one of the tougher things will be adjusting to the
more physical play. It will be hard to hold my position when the players are
bigger and taller. I'll also have to read the defense and think more like a
basketball player, instead of just going out and playing. But I also need to
stay confident that I can go out there and play with anybody."
Q. Is there a current WNBA player you look up to?
Mosby: "I look up to Swin Cash a lot. I love her excitement and the
way she plays her game. Even though she was thin to be playing the four position
in college, she utilized her strength well and could jump over people to get
rebounds. She's a fun player to watch."
Q. Are there players in the league now who you'd like to play on a team
with?
Mosby: "Deanna Nolan. I think she's one of the great guards in the
league right now. I hope people don't get mad with me for saying it, but she's
a great guard with great skills and I'd love to play with her one day."
Q. Is there a specific team you'd love to play with?
Mosby: "Oh, anybody who wants me. Whoever gets me is getting a great
package. Believe me!"
Q. What is the best piece of advice anyone ever gave you?
Mosby: "My mother always told me to put God first in everything you
do. So I always take that and go with it. I always keep it in the back of my
mind."
Q. Do you like to talk a lot of trash out on the court?
Mosby: (Laughs hysterically.)
Q. I'll take that as a yes.
Mosby: "No, I used to, but now I take more of a show-'em-what-I-got
approach. But still, there are times when I get mad and I'll talk a little trash.
If we're losing by a lot, I won't be saying anything, but it's a challenge for
me to (keep from responding) when someone talks trash to me."
Q. What are five things a WNBA fan needs to know about you?
Mosby: "I treat everyone the same… I don't care who they are,
how they look, anything like that. That's just how I grew up. Also, I LOVE to
talk. I love to sing gospel music. I love to dance. I'm just an all-around fun
person to be around."
Q. Do you have any pregame rituals?
Mosby: "Not really. I just go to sleep. I try to relax a lot, so I
put on some gospel music and take it easy. Then, at the end, just before I run
out onto the court, I turn on some hip-hop and crunk. See, this is what you
have to do: listen to the gospel, soothe your nerves, relax, then you have to
pump it up!"
Q. How much attention do you pay to dieting, working out and training hard
in the gym?
Mosby: "I'd say I pay a lot of attention to it, because there's a lot
out there that I want to do beside basketball. I'd love to do runways if I have
the chance. But when I see a hamburger that looks really good, I'm going to
eat it."
Q. You mentioned the runway. Do you consider yourself a fashion-conscious
person? Are you always focused on trying to look good?
Mosby: "It's always important. I mean, I don't live or die by what
I'm going to wear, but even when I was little, I'd walk in the house and start
modeling clothes for my mother. It's something I've always been doing."
Q. Do you have any favorite designers?
Mosby: "Oh, I don't know… Gucci, Chanel, Rocawear… maybe
they'll hire me one day!"
Q. What do you want to do professionally once your basketball career is
over?
Mosby: "I would really like to do some fashion design. I'd also like
to coach. I would be a great recruiter because with my personality, I'd be able
to get anybody. Coaches beware!"
