NEW YORK, April 24 – The Cleveland Rockers won the second annual WNBA Draft Lottery Thursday afternoon, earning the first pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft. The Draft is scheduled for Friday, April 25 at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and NBA TV.

Cleveland had 271 chances out of 1,000 to receive the first overall selection. The Sacramento Monarchs will have the second pick in the Draft, the Detroit Shock will select third and fifth, and the Phoenix Mercury will select fourth.

Following the Draft Lottery, the WNBA held a one-round Dispersal Draft in order to disseminate the players formerly on the rosters of the Miami Sol and Portland Fire. Twenty-six players were available to be selected, and teams made their selections in inverse order of their 2002 regular season finishes. The top three picks went to the Detroit Shock, who selected former Miami Sol center Ruth Riley, the Minnesota Lynx, who selected former Sol guard Sheri Sam, and the Cleveland Rockers, who selected former Sol guard Betty Lennox. All players not selected will become unrestricted free agents once a collective bargaining agreement is signed.

Both the Draft Lottery and the Dispersal Draft were held via conference calls from the league office in New York with representatives of the WNBA teams.
