One-on-One with the
2001 Draft Picks

Lauren Jackson chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the number one pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

JT from [209.246.80.84], at 11:46am ET
Here is a question for Lauren: First off congrats. What player have you learned the most from in terms of how to play the game?

Lauren Jackson at 11:46am ET
I would have to say Wilt Chamberlain and of course, my mother. But I'd have to say that I watched him a lot and he was my focus.
Sondel from [209.210.72.2], at 11:46am ET
Lauren, what's more exciting, playing the Olympics or being the 2001 first round draft pick?

Lauren Jackson at 11:47am ET
I don't know. It's tough to say because the WNBA is the best league in the world and for me, I'm as nervous as anything. But I was nervous before the Olympics too so I'd say they're on equal par.
Jason from [128.206.189.66], at 11:47am ET
Lauren, what do you see as the differences between the WNBL and the WNBA? How do you think you will adapt?

Lauren Jackson at 11:48am ET
Probably the physicality and the strength and the athleticism, just to start.
Aussie from [128.206.189.66], at 11:48am ET
How do you feel about going to Seattle?

Lauren Jackson at 11:49am ET
I'm really excited. I would have been happy anywhere just because I haven't lived here before, just with the shopping and everything. I'm very excited.

Kelly Miller chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the second pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

JT from [209.246.80.84], at 11:50am ET
if Kelly Miller is talking questions here is one: You can play both the one and two, but where do you feel most comfortable?

Kelly Miller at 11:50am ET
It doesn't really matter to me, I guess. Whatever they need me to play, I'll feel comfortable playing. I played the point guard in college, but I can play the two.
Justin from [172.138.199.160], at 11:50am ET
Dear Kelly, I'm a fellow Minnesotan. How do you feel to be placed on the Charlotte? How will you make an impact?

Kelly Miller at 11:51am ET
It's not too far away so it's exciting that the fans from home can come see me play. I'm excited.

K. Jones from [141.225.225.16], at 11:51am ET
Kelly, how do you feel about playing on a different team than your sister?

Kelly Miller at 11:52am ET
It will be a little weird at first, but we've done it at camps and stuff so it won't be too tough.

Tamika Catchings chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the third pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

Alison from [207.135.28.30], at 11:53am ET
Tamika!!! Yeah! Go Fever!
johnson from [205.188.195.59], at 11:53am ET
Yeeeesssss Tamika!
shannon from [152.163.201.72], at 11:54am ET
Hey Tamika, I am so happy you were selected. Did you want to go to Washington with Chamique?

Tamika Catchings at 11:55am ET
I don't think going to Washington was on my mind. I want to play so I don't really care where I end up. I'm really excited to go to Indiana. I've had the chance to play for Coach Fortner, so I'm excited for another chance.
Taylor and Sarah from [64.183.65.18], at 11:55am ET
Congratulations and good luck Tamika! How long will it be until your knee is healed enough so you can play 100%?

Tamika Catchings at 11:55am ET
I'm ahead of schedule right now; I'm happy to be back playing. I'm happy just to have the opportunity. If it was up to me, probably in about two months or so.
Ghill3327 from [152.163.197.51], at 11:55am ET
Tamika, do you think you are going to be able to make the adjustments necessary to be the great scorer in the WNBA that you were in the NCAA?

Tamika Catchings at 11:56am ET
I think the biggest adjustment for any player is having to adapt to what team you go to and the players. As for me, I feel like I'm ready to go and play.
Pumpkin from [205.241.217.152], at 11:55am ET
Tamika, congrats! You are the bomb!

Jackie Stiles chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the fourth pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

Justin from [172.138.199.160], at 11:59am ET
Hey Jackie, congratulations on being drafted. I feel you are a scoring machine. How will you adjust to the WNBA from college?

Jackie Stiles at 11:59am ET
I know it's going to be a huge adjustment for me. It will be tough. But I'm just going to have to rely on my experience at SMS and what Coach Burnett's done.
Bill D. from [152.163.207.204], at 12:00pm ET
Did you think you would go in the first round?

Jackie Stiles at 12:00pm ET
I never knew exactly for sure where I'd go. I'm just speechless right now. It's such a great opportunity. To go in the top four, dreams are coming true for me.
Mike from [204.185.36.197], at 12:00pm ET
Jackie, what do you think you will be able to bring to Portland?

Jackie Stiles at 12:01pm ET
I'll probably know a lot more about that when I get to Portland. I'm just going to go in there and try to jell with the team and do whatever Coach Hargrove needs me to do.
Springfield from [206.52.76.253], at 12:01pm ET
Congratulations, Jackie! (Sure wish you were closer to 'home', but glad you made a top pick!)
CHRIS from [65.65.233.45], at 12:01pm ET
Jackie, I heard that Chuckie Booms has challenged you to a game. are you considering it?

Jackie Stiles at 12:01pm ET
I'll say this, I'm definitely considering it and we've talked a lot about it. But in the next three weeks, I'll make my decision for sure.

Ruth Riley chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the fifth pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

Coquese Washington at 12:04pm ET
Tell everybody something about Ruth Riley that they don't know.

Ruth Riley at 12:04pm ET
I like to joke around a lot and play pranks on my teammates, stuff like that.
Sam W from [4.22.130.1], at 12:04pm ET
The Ruth, The Ruth, The Ruth is on Fire!!
John Wilson from [63.215.231.91], at 12:04pm ET
At the beginning of this year did you ever envision this?

Ruth Riley at 12:05pm ET
I didn't really know what to expect coming in. I was pretty focused on the NCAA tournament and what we wanted to do there. But I was excited about the opportunity.
JP from [205.175.225.5], at 12:05pm ET
Way to go Ruth! Do you feel the pressure is now on to perform big in the WNBA?

Ruth Riley at 12:05pm ET
I have a different role in the league and on the team that I'm going to. It's going to be whatever they need me to do out there. There will be some pressure, being a rookie, but I don't feel like I have to carry the team

Coquese Washington at 12:05pm ET
What do you think the biggest adjustment will be for you, going from college to the WNBA?

Ruth Riley at 12:06pm ET
I think the biggest adjustment will be the strength of the players I'm going up against. I think the post players are going to be a lot stronger and it's going to be a more physical game.

Coquese Washington at 12:06pm ET
How do you feel about guarding players your size who will step away from the basket?

Ruth Riley at 12:08pm ET
I think it will be a challenge for me. It will cause me to improve my game, to be able to defend players who are more versatile.
dan from [209.240.220.203], at 12:08pm ET
Did winning a ring in college change your focus on the game Ruth?

Ruth Riley at 12:09pm ET
I think the experience of winning a championship is going to drive me towards reliving the experience in the WNBA.
NAT from [64.12.102.54], at 12:09pm ET
Will you go easy on Coquese when you play against her?

Ruth Riley at 12:10pm ET
I think it's going to be interesting to match up against Coquese. I know how talented she is but I don't predict her bringing it into the lane too many times.

Svetlana Abrosimova chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the seventh pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

Swoopes from [205.198.36.197], at 12:12pm ET
Yeah Svetlana -- yeah for MN!
Jamal from [199.224.110.37], at 12:13pm ET
How much of a dream is the WNBA, being that you are a foreign player?

Svetlana Abrosimova at 12:13pm ET
I'm just really happy and excited. The best part of this is that people in Europe think that if it's in America, it's the best. I'm just excited to be in the top 10.
K-Da$h from Minnesota from [208.242.212.159], at 12:13pm ET
Svet, despite your injury I still believe you were the best player in the draft. How are you recovering?

Svetlana Abrosimova at 12:14pm ET
Actually next week, I'm having a second surgery. Then I'm taking a week off. Then I can start jogging and running. They've told me if everything goes well, I should be back by the middle of June.
Amy from [152.163.205.74], at 12:14pm ET
Congratulations Svet!!
CT fan from [155.43.177.184], at 12:14pm ET
Are you going to be able to have your parents come for good now?

Svetlana Abrosimova at 12:15pm ET
When my Mom was leaving, she said, I hope I'm going to be back in a month. They're very excited for me. It's a big deal for them and I'm happy they'll be able to see me play.

Marie Ferdinand chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the eighth pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

LSUBatonRouge from [209.215.117.4], at 12:16pm ET
Congrats Marie! When did you first envision yourself playing professional basketball in the US?

Marie Ferdinand at 12:17pm ET
Like in high school, growing up, before they had the WNBA I thought I'd have to be the first female NBA player or I'd have to play overseas. I never thought I would be able to play in the WNBA.

Coquese Washington at 12:17pm ET
You didn't play on TV a lot in college; where did you get your game?

Marie Ferdinand at 12:18pm ET
Just growing up. I've been playing with my brothers. My physical play, the aggressive skills I have going to the hole, that comes from my brothers.

Coquese Washington at 12:18pm ET
What do you think will be the biggest adjustment in the WNBA?

Marie Ferdinand at 12:18pm ET
I'm going to have to go back to my jump shot because the players will be bigger and stronger and I won't be able to drive as much.

Katie Douglas chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the 10th pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

Aaron from [144.189.40.222], at 12:22pm ET
KT - How do you feel about playing for Coach Peck again and did you hope you might have had the opportunity to play with Steph or Kari again?

Katie Douglas at 12:23pm ET
I think it's a great opportunity. I've known Coach Peck and she's supported me so I'm very excited to go back and play in her system.
K-Da$h from Minnesota from [208.242.212.159], at 12:23pm ET
Katie with everything you've had to endure does this make it all worth it?

Katie Douglas at 12:24pm ET
Definitely. To hear your name called in the WNBA draft is a tremendous accomplishment. It's a thrill to come to this moment and have that accomplishment.

Coquese Washington at 12:24pm ET
What do you think the biggest adjustment is going to be?

Katie Douglas at 12:24pm ET
I think I'm going to have to get stronger and quicker because they have such great athletes. But I have a strong work ethic and I'm willing to get better every day. I'm just excited about being drafted.
Southpaw from [150.208.38.231], at 12:24pm ET
Good luck Katie...you gotta represent for the lefties
Michelle in Orlando from [162.93.253.79], at 12:25pm ET
Welcome to Orlando Katie! I am looking forward to seeing you play here. What do you feel will be the greatest asset you will bring to Orlando?

Katie Douglas at 12:25pm ET
I think it's going to be my work ethic and I bring versatility. I can play a variety of positions.
Jason from [128.206.189.66], at 12:25pm ET
What do you expect of the WNBA?

Katie Douglas at 12:26pm ET
I expect it to be an incredible experience. To play against the best players in the world every day, I expect it to be a lot of fun.
LEEANN_AZ from [63.50.244.143], at 12:26pm ET
Do you think by going to Orlando your transition to the WNBA will be smoother?

Katie Douglas at 12:27pm ET
I think so. To a certain degree. Coach Peck knows me individually as a person. With our relationship, I feel comfortable going to her. I'm just excited to be going to Orlando with Coach Peck and her sister.

LaQuanda Barksdale chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the 12th pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

Derek from [152.2.244.153], at 12:29pm ET
Congratulations from da Heels! How do you think playing for Coach Hatchell will help your pro game?

LaQuanda Barksdale at 12:30pm ET
It's helped me tremendously. The coaches work really hard on developing individual skills and that really helped me, being a raw talent coming out of high school.
Caro from [209.88.60.85], at 12:30pm ET
CONGRATS LAQUANDA!! How do you feel now?? What do you think about your future in the WNBA?

LaQuanda Barksdale at 12:30pm ET
I think it's very very bright. A lot of people don't know who I am so I think I'm going to surprise people.
Justin Wilson from [63.34.218.27], at 12:30pm ET
Well done LaQuanda!!! What do you think you can bring into the Portland Fire?

LaQuanda Barksdale at 12:31pm ET
I'm excited. I get to play with my coach, Sylvia Crawley. She's helped me a lot and that will help my transition.
K-Da$h from Minnesota from [208.242.212.159], at 12:31pm ET
Keep lighting it up "Q"
K-Da$h from Minnesota from [208.242.212.159], at 12:31pm ET
LaQuanda, Congrats, did you expect to be a !st round pick?

LaQuanda Barksdale at 12:31pm ET
Maybe the middle of the season I didn't think so because my team didn't do so well this year and I felt it was my fault a little bit. But our season ended early this year and I had a lot of time to think about it and work out and I started thinking I might go a little higher.

Coquese Washington at 12:32pm ET
How do you think your relationship with Sylvia Crawley will help your transition?

LaQuanda Barksdale at 12:32pm ET
I think it's going to make it smoother. I think the dynamics might be a little different because that's her job, but it's really going to be a help to have her there.

Camille Cooper chatted live on WNBA.com following her selection as the 16th pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Here's what she had to say:

Coquese Washington at 12:44pm ET
How does it feel?
Dominique from [32.101.208.140], at 12:44pm ET
Congradulations Camille!!!! I am so happy for you. I was starting to get mad that they were taking so long to pick you. I hope you enjoy playing with 'Kari again.

Camille Cooper at 12:44pm ET
I'm really excited. I guess it was hard sitting there waiting. But I'm really blessed and I'm grateful to the LA franchise.

Coquese Washington at 12:45pm ET
What do you want to contribute?

Camille Cooper at 12:45pm ET
I just want to do anything. It will be fun playing with my former teammate, Ukari Figgs.
K-Da$h from Minnesota from [208.242.212.159], at 12:46pm ET
Camille, do you look forward to re-uniting with Figgs?

Camille Cooper at 12:47pm ET
I'm very excited to be playing with her. She's one of my closest friends off the court. We're from the same hometown. She's a tremendous athlete with the style she plays.
Caro from [209.88.60.85], at 12:47pm ET
Congrats Camille, this was a great pick. Good luck, and I am sure you will be one the most ipact player in the league this year...
K-Da$h from Minnesota from [208.242.212.159], at 12:47pm ET
Camille, great tourney. How do you think that helped your status in the draft?

Camille Cooper at 12:48pm ET
I don't if it played a big role in it. I'm definitely proud of the success we were able to have. Advancing in the tournament was a good experience and it really motivated me to work hard to take my game to the next level.
