  • Overview

The Sky came out big winners of the 2013 WNBA Draft, selecting eventual All-Star and Rookie of the Year Elena Delle Donne with the second overall pick. Currently slated in the No. 10 spot of the first round, Head Coach Pokey Chatman isn't expecting another EDD-like talent, but is optimistic about adding another piece to what she hopes is a championship puzzle.

"We did several things well last year, especially on offense where we can score the basketball in a variety of ways, which of course adding Delle Donne to the mix, and the progression of Vandersloot [point guard, Courtney], helped," said Chatman. "But I think we need grit, toughness, people who can help in areas not necessarily found on the stat sheet."

Chatman, who guided the Sky to their first postseason berth last year, before succumbing to the veteran, gritty, defending WNBA Champion Indiana Fever, elaborated on what she'd like Chicago to improve upon in 2014.

"For example, we had some good blocks numbers, which is great, but I'm thinking those numbers are too high because they show that players were getting into the paint to take those shots," said Chatman. "We need players who will defend the basketball on the perimeter and limit the opposition chances in the paint."

With needs identified, the tricky part for Chatman and the Sky is preparing for which players will still be on the board when they select at No. 10.

"It's a wide open year. Howard [Natasha, Fla. State] is moving up to 4-5-6 area and with Achonwa [Natalie, Notre Dame] getting injured, maybe that causes snowball effect, moves Gatling [Markeisha, NC State] up the draft," said Chatman. "So, we will just do our due diligence, look at the players we think can help and pick the best one when it's our turn."

If Delle Donne, fellow All-Star Sylvia Fowles, explosive gunner Epiphanny Prince and Company can get that help via the 2014 Draft, the Sky may be the limit in Chicago.
