vs.
POSTGAME QUOTES
JUNE 25, 2004
COMETS COACH VAN CHANCELLOR
On the game:
"I thought offensive rebounding and turnovers just killed us, especially in the second half. Tell [Yolanda Griffith] she made the Olympic team she doesn’t have to try and show me that. Here’s the kiss of death, 5-for-12 [from the line], you give up too many offensive rebounds, points and turnovers, you’re going to get beat every time."
MICHELLE SNOW
On the game:
"I’m not going to make excuses about whether we get enough rest or not, that’s no excuse. We gave up a lot of easy baskets and turned the ball over. In the second half we didn’t come out with the same energy we started the game with and it cost us. Anytime you’re home and get two big plays in and get the home court crowd involved, of course it’s going to build momentum for you."
FELICIA RAGLAND
On the game:
"I think we had opportunities to win and offensive rebounding, in the end, really killed us. I thought we worked hard the whole game, we fought hard, we helped each other on defense and we got some key stops at the end. It was just the rebounding and turnovers. They got the momentum off our turnovers."
MONARCHS COACH JOHN WHISENANT
On his team:
"We are a blue-collar team that has to play defensively to win. We have to battle to score and tonight was a great battle. I was proud of my ladies in the last 10 minutes of the game because we competed defensively, which made it tough on them to score."
On his players:
"Yo” (Yolanda Griffith) is a warrior around the basket. She’s not someone you isolate to get shots but goes and gets them herself. Ticha’s value is that she is competitive and she runs the team."
KARA LAWSON
On the Monarchs:
"We have a big road trip and we need to win as many as we can at home. Our focus has been to get these wins at home. One of the luxuries we have is having three big players. When they went man-to-man, we were able to exploit our height advantage. That is our bread and butter. We want to go inside."
TICHA PENICHEIRO
On her game:
"They double-teamed us all the time against the post, and that gave me open looks. I am comfortable to make those open shots, and I have built more confidence in myself. I had to knock in that shot (3-pointer near end of the game), and I am glad it went in."
YOLANDA GRIFFITH
On the Comets:
"Sheryl (Swoopes) stepped up without Tina Thompson in the game, but we didn’t focus on just that one player but focused on the team."
On the Monarchs:
"We have a balanced team. I don’t need to score twenty points day-in and day-out to win. We have a talented team, and anyone can score those points whether it be Tangela (Smith) one day or DeMya (Walker) another."
On her game:
"My teammates found me, and I concentrated and hit the shots."
