vs.
POSTGAME QUOTES
JUNE 12, 2004
COMETS COACH VAN CHANCELLOR
On the game:
"I thought when we were up 14 we took off a little bit. We really had to get tough on the boards and rebound our way back into this one. Going into the overtime without Tina Thompson I thought we were in trouble. That’s where Tiffani Johnson was as big as she has ever been as a member of the Houston Comets. If Tiffani doesn’t play as well as she does in the overtime we don’t win. If she doesn’t put out that kind of effort we lose.”
On his team being out-rebounded:
“I’ll worry about working on rebounding and losing a 14 point lead next week. Right now I’m just happy we won. We won a game tonight that honestly, I thought we had lost."
SHERYL SWOOPES
On the win:
"This is a huge win for us. I just remember thinking after we were up 14, how did we let them come back. We were playing so well in the beginning of the second half and all of sudden they’re back. Semeka Randall was so big for them, coming off the bench for the Stars. She crashed the boards, hit jumpers, and really lead their comeback effort."
On the overtime:
"With Tina hurt going into OT we really could have gotten discouraged and given in, but we didn’t. We pulled together - the starters, the bench, everybody pulled together. We overcame a lot to win tonight. This is the most excited I’ve been all year. In the first half they really gave us everything they had offensively and we withstood that. Then we came out in the second and played so well together."
TINA THOMPSON
On the injury to her knee:
"It was on the last play before the overtime. I was just trying to be aggressive, go for a rebound, nothing unusual, and I just heard it pop. Not only could I hear it but I felt it. I don’t really know what’s wrong technically, we’ll look at that tomorrow when we get back to Houston. I just know it hurts."
TIFFANI JOHNSON
On losing Tina Thompson to injury:
"Anytime a great player like Tina Thompson gets hurt, it takes two or three players to pick up that slack. Before the OT I went to Michelle Snow and said ‘Let’s be those players, we have to pick it up in the OT.’ Together we were very aggressive in the overtime."
On losing a 14-point lead:
"Sometimes we have lapses like that. As a team we don’t always play 40 minutes. We are very up and down. It seems like we play that way almost every night. We know that’s not good but that’s Comets basketball."
SILVER STARS COACH DEE BROWN
On his team's effort:
"This was more of what we were looking for. We gave ourselves a chance. Losses aren’t good, but we gave ourselves a chance and that’s all we can ask for. We fought back. We were in the game the whole time; it was never out of reach. We just kept playing hard."
On his team's bench play:
"The bench did a great job. Semeka had great effort. As a coaching staff, that’s all you can ask your players to do."
On Toccara Williams:
"She has showed poise since day one. I’m surprised we were able to get her in the third round. She’s a true point guard. She ran the team and got the ball where she needed to get it. Toccara gave us energy."
On Semeka Randall:
"She was aggressive in a lot of situations. She gives us effort and energy. She plays hard every time out on the court. She would run through a wall for you. Her energy got the crowd and her teammates going."
SEMEKA RANDALL
On the Stars' effort:
"When you get the opportunity, you have to give it all you’ve got and leave it on the floor. Every loss is disappointing. Obviously we were right there, so it hurts a little more."
On Toccara Williams:
"She’s been doing that since training camp. She plays hard. That’s the only way she knows. She’s a smart player."
TOCCARA WILLIAMS
On her play:
"The team was depending on me. Shannon (Johnson) is under the weather, so they were pushing each other and me. They have confidence in me and that makes me play better. From my perspective, my teammates are harder on me than any opponent."
