HOUSTON, March 13, 2007 -- The Houston Comets today announced the signings of Hamchétou Maïga-Ba and LaTasha Butts to free agent contracts. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Maïga-Ba has played over 1,000 minutes and over 100 games in a Monarchs uniform. She has grabbed over 100 offensive rebounds in the WNBA, and has stolen the ball over 100 times during her WNBA career. In 2006, she was named the Sacramento Monarchs All-Decade Team Member
"We're extremely excited to have Hamchétou as a part of our team. The energy she brings each time she steps on the court changes the level of intensity on the floor," said Head Coach Karleen Thompson. "She (Maïga-Ba) is a key part of the puzzle we are trying to put together to bring the championship back to Houston."
Butts recorded 13 points at Seattle (5/20/04) in her first WNBA game. She has played in 30 WNBA games, all while coming off the bench. In addition, Butts had the Lynx's lowest turnover ratio in 2004, averaging one miscue every 18.4 minutes.
"She (Butts) is one of the hardest workers in the league and a great defender," says Thompson. "Whether she's playing two minutes or 40, she gives you 100 percent effort. She can be a great asset to our team." During her time at University of Tennessee, Butts was named to the All-Midwest Regional Team, the All-SEC Second Team and to the All-SEC Third Team by the Associated Press.
This season will mark the 11th Anniversary for the Comets and the WNBA. The
2007 season will tip off at Seattle on May 19 when the Comets visit the Storm.
The first home game at Toyota Center will take place on May 29 when the Comets
host the San Antonio Silver Stars. To purchase season tickets, mini-plans or
