Trudi Lacey
College - North Carolina State '81
Entering her fifth season with the team, Trudi Lacey serves as
general manager and head coach of the Charlotte Sting. She has served in the dual roles since November 19, 2003, and is responsible for all basketball-related decisions for the franchise.
Lacey orchestrated several moves this past offseason, acquiring Sheri Sam via free agency and obtaining Helen Darling and Tangela Smith through trades. She also selected Janel McCarville with the first overall selection in the 2005 WNBA Draft.
In her first two seasons, Lacey has guided the team to a 34-34 record. In her first year at the helm in 2003, her squad posted an 18-16 record and reached the WNBA playoffs.
During her time as an assistant coach in 2001 and 2002, the Sting posted a 36-28 record, advancing to the WNBA playoffs both years. Lacey helped engineer one of the greatest in-season turnarounds in professional sports history in 2001 when Charlotte opened the season by going
1-10, only to close the campaign on a 17-4 run. They topped that regular-season finish by
defeating the number one and two seeds in the Eastern Conference during the playoffs to reach the WNBA Finals.
Prior to joining the WNBA, Lacey was involved with USA Basketball as a player, coach
and committee member. As assistant director of women's programs beginning in 1997, Lacey assisted in the development and implementation of all women's programs pertaining to trials, training camps and international competitions. She also worked closely with the Men's and Women's National Teams, where they both won gold medals during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Lacey's coaching career began at her alma mater, N.C. State, in 1983. She has also coached at the University of Maryland, the University of South Florida, NAIA Francis Marion College, Manhatten College and James Madison University.
Off the court, Lacey is president and founder of LifeCoach Designs, LLC, a personal and
business consulting company. She is also very involved in the community, serving on the Board of Directors for “A Child's Place” and on the Wade Trophy Committee for the WBCA. She actively supports the Dawn Staley Foundation, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Samaritan Purse, Girl Scouts, Tri-County Animal Rescue and the YMCA.
Lacey has also worked as a television analyst for ESPN, FoxSports Net and C-SET. She is a member of the WBCA, BCA and the EWGA.
A star player at North Carolina State University, Lacey was honored as a Women's Sports Foundation and National Scouting Service All-American in 1980 and had her jersey retired
in 2000.
