Sun Trade Holt, Black For Two Draft Picks

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (April 7, 2010) – The Connecticut Sun announced today that it has traded guard/forward Amber Holt and center Chante Black to the Tulsa Shock in exchange for the No. 7 pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, and their second-round pick in 2011.

Connecticut now has two first-round picks, four picks overall, in the 2010 WNBA Draft, which is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The Sun will open the draft with the No. 1 pick, and also have the 15th (second round) and 27th (third round) selections.

“We’re glad to have another pick in this year’s draft,” Sun coach Mike Thibault said. “We have not decided what we are going to do with it. We have three or four options, depending on how the draft falls. We felt like we knew what the core of our team was. We would have had to cut another player when Sandrine comes, and this will help alleviate that situation as well as some salary cap issues. Amber and Chante are going to be good young players in the league, and they will help Tulsa. But we felt like we were heading in a different direction.”

A 2008 WNBA All-Rookie Team selection, Holt was taken with the ninth overall pick in the 2008 Draft out of Middle Tennessee State. She was one of just two rookies to start all 34 games, averaging 6.5 points per game. Last season, she missed the first 11 games of the regular season with a broken right hand suffered in the preseason. She averaged six points per game last year.

Black was taken with the 10th overall pick in the 2009 Draft out of Duke. She appeared in 33 games with eight starts, and finished second on the team with 27 blocks.

“We saw a great opportunity to continue our off season moves by adding another high pick in what has turned out to be a very deep draft,” Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. “While it is always tough to trade away players that have engrained themselves with our fans, we know that we are building a tremendous group to help us with our ultimate goal, a WNBA championship.”

The Connecticut Sun will open its eighth season of play on May 15th by hosting the Chicago Sky at 3:30 p.m. Season tickets are on sale now and can be reserved by calling a Sun Ticket Representatives at 1.877.SUN.TIXX or by visiting
