Sienko To Help Select USA Basketball Women’s Teams

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (March 26, 2013) – Connecticut Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko has been chosen to serve on the 2013-16 USA Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee.

Sienko will help pick the 2014 USA World Championship and 2016 U.S. Olympic teams during this four-year commitment. Other members of the committee include Women’s National Team Director Carol Callan, San Antonio Silver Stars General Manager and Head Coach Dan Hughes, WNBA star and three-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Smith and Renee Brown, who is the WNBA Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations.

“It is an amazing and unexpected honor to participate on this committee with individuals I respect personally and professionally,” Sienko said. “There is a sense of awe that comes from an opportunity such as this, and I will do my best to contribute to the continued success of USA Basketball on an international level.”

Sienko has been the General Manager of the Sun since 2003, when the team relocated from Orlando to Connecticut. Under his guidance, Connecticut has been one of the most successful franchises in the league, averaging more than 20 wins per season with eight playoff berths and two trips to the WNBA Finals. Prior to the Sun, Sienko also served as the General Manager of the New England Blizzard of the now-defunct ABL.

“Chris is integral to the success of the Connecticut Sun in selecting talented athletes and identifying the necessary intangibles that lead to a successful team on the court,” Callan said. “His support of the women's game and its players is evident as the Sun have hosted several WNBA All-Star games and other events that have creatively promoted women's basketball. We look forward to having Chris bring those qualities to USA Basketball's player selection process.”

The USA Basketball Women's National Team Player Selection Committee is responsible for selecting the USA National Team pool of players. From that pool, the 12-member 2014 FIBA World Championship Team and the 2016 Olympic Games Team will be selected.

The USA women have won the gold medal in five straight Olympics, and captured the FIBA World Championship gold medal in 2010.
