My whole family attended the game, including my nieces and nephew. I had about 12 people there. We spend the night in New York, and Lindsay Whalen joined us. We sure have a lot of energy and noise when we get together, and Lindsay fit right in.
No sooner did I arrive home, though, and I was back on the basketball court. But instead of playing, I was teaching. My sister Barb and I worked out six kids at a time for an hour. We really work on the fundamentals of the game – ball-handling, footwork, passing, ect…). We did that every day from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. I enjoyed the afternoons with my own workouts, and by catching up with my family and friends.
I took advantage of the break by running two camps. Our first camp was on the weekend, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and our second ran Monday through Friday from 4-8 p.m.
Barb and I have been running basketball camps for about 10 years – The Black Sisters Camp. We run it at our brother’s farm, Stepping Stone, which is located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It sits on 35 acres, and the atmosphere for a camp is great. Over 100 horses are boarded at the farm, and there are basketball courts, a tennis court and swimming pool, all outside. The pool came in handy as we had a lot of very hot and humid days.
On Sunday, August 8th, we had Connecticut Sun strength and conditioning coach Lisa Ciaravella come out and really work the kids. Lisa taught them about the importance of proper running from and balance. She also taught them speed and agility drills that they can work on at home. It was a very successful weekend.
My last week home was the busiest. I ran my camp from Monday to Friday (4-8 p.m.). During the day, we did individuals from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. And I had my own workouts from 1-3 p.m. Needless to say, those were long days. But I really enjoyed coaching and teaching the game.
During the break, I also had a chance to do some horseback riding, which I really enjoyed. It gives me a chance to get away from everything and just relax. The final thing I did before returning to Connecticut was to participate in the wedding of one of my best friends. It was awesome! It was fun to get out of my basketball shoes and dress up for one day. I got a chance to catch up with a lot of my high school friends. It really wrapped up my break nicely.
My time off was productive and fun. I am now ready to get back to work and finish the season off strong. I plan to be in Connecticut during October.
