Brittney Griner Sidelined, Thompson Joins the All-Star Game Roster

July 25, 2013

SEATTLE Seattle Storm forward Tina Thompson the WNBAs all-time career scoring leader, a four-time WNBA champion, and the only player to have participated in every WNBA season has been named as a replacement player for Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2013, league President Laurel J. Richie announced today. Thompson will fill the spot of injured Phoenix Mercury rookie center Brittney Griner on the Western Conference roster.

For the 38-year old Thompson, this marks her record ninth All-Star appearance, placing her ahead of Lisa Leslie and Tamika Catchings. Leslie competed in eight Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star Games in her 12 seasons; Catchings is set to participate in her eighth this weekend.

Griner, who was voted to the game as a starter by fans, has missed Phoenixs last five games due to a knee injury. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm, Griner will attend the All-Star festivities.

Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2013 will be nationally broadcast on ABC, Saturday, July 27, at 3:30 p.m. ET from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. This is the third time the Sun will host the WNBAs All-Star event.

The 38-year old Thompson enters the Storms game at Los Angeles today as the league's all-time leader in points (7,195), field goals (2,539), and minutes played (15,566). The first player selected in the inaugural WNBA college draft in 1997, Thompson is an eight-time All-WNBA pick who helped the Houston Comets to the leagues first four championships. She was selected to the leagues All-Decade Team in 2006 and named one of the WNBAs Top 15 Players during the leagues 15th season.

In 16 games this season, Thompson ranks second among Storm players in scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounds (4.8 rpg).

Indiana Fever Head Coach Lin Dunn, who guided her club to the WNBA title last season, will lead the Eastern Conference team. Minnesota Lynx Head Coach Cheryl Reeve will coach the Western Conference squad by virtue of the Lynx having won the 2012 Western Conference Championship. Reeve will select a player from her roster to insert into the starting lineup in place of Griner.
