Postgame Quotes/Notes: San Antonio 90, Storm 66

Sept. 14, 2012

STORM HEAD COACH BRIAN AGLER:

On the game:
We did a good job in the first half after we got going. I thought we could have played better. We turned it over quite a bit early in the game. I think we had four turnovers in the first two minutes. When I look at this game, I look at as we played solid in the in the first half and the last eight minutes of the third quarter. The first two minutes went from being down two to down 10. We played solid until the fourth quarter, then the fourth quarter got away from us.

On playing short-handed:
We have been on the road for quite a while. Obviously we didn't want to play Tanisha (Wright) huge minutes tonight. Sue (Bird) and Lauren (Jackson) didn't play and of course they are vital parts to our team. I thought Ann (Wauters) played real well. She needed that game. We had some other people play pretty solid minutes. As we get our group back we feel like we can be much improved going into the playoffs.

On San Antonio's offense:
They shot the ball well from the three. Especially Becky (Hammon) and (Shameka) Christon. They got some second opportunities. They scored off of our turnovers. They got to the free throw line. They scored fifty almost sixty points in those three areas.

STORM FORWARD SVETLANA ABROSIMOVA:

On the game:
Obviously, we didn't start the game well. They were a lot more aggressive and they were stripping the ball away from us. When we got in the game, got into the flow, I felt like we did a lot of good things and obviously we're missing our two best players. We got in a groove, but I don't really know what happened after halftime.

On the difference in the second half:
We just started really bad with the first four minutes, but then we came back. The game is a game of runs, just our runs were not as good as theirs. They shot the ball very well. Their three-point percentage was amazing. We didn't get inside as much as we wanted to in the first half, because we didn't shoot any free throws. It's a lot of things we just have to keep getting better at and not get frustrated.

STORM GUARD SUE BIRD:

On her hip injury:
I think it's just day-to-day and see how I feel. It's just one of those things where you want to kind of calm down and not aggravate it any more than it already is, and then I'll be good to go.

On when the hip flared up:
I just felt something weird in the game against Atlanta. It's one of those things where I've had it for a really long time and it's about managing it. Unfortunately, sometimes it can flare up at the wrong time. Luckily, we have an opportunity here where we've secured the fourth spot, we can't really catch the third spot and we're just trying to gear up for the playoffs. With that comes trying to play better as a team as well as those that are banged up getting healthy.

SAN ANTONIO HEAD COACH DAN HUGHES:
On the game:
I thought we went back and forth in the first quarter. I thought defensively we had two really good quarters. It gives you a chance to aggressively play in transition. We ask them to be aggressive with the basketball out of our defense and they did a good job at doing that. The second thing we asked them to do in the second half was to rebound better. We were really getting out rebounded in the first half. Then I thought we did a great job, with the numbers getting even in the second half.

On the team playing to its strengths:
I feel like this team has a uniqueness in that we're not your longest team. But what we got is that we share the ball really well. We have the ability with quickness to rotate defensively and that being said we have to be able to deal with the teams that are strong and physical. This league is good. You're going to have moments where things look pretty and you're going to have moments where they don't. What this group has and what we've got to have is persistence. In that first half I thought Seattle shot the ball well. We have to keep persistence so we can get to a point where our style of play comes out; that didn't happen in the early parts of the game.

On the importance of shooting well:
No matter how you slice it's making shots. A lot of making shots has to do with the timing of making that shot. How did you spread the floor? How did you move the ball? Are they receiving the ball at the right time? We're a team that probably plays its best when we're in an attacking defense. It always helps when the ball goes in the basket.

SAN ANTONIO GUARD BECKY HAMMON:
On her confidence level after a slump:
I'm a shooter so I just have to keep shooting the ball. I was not doing anything differently tonight than I was doing the previous nights. It is just nice to see the ball going in the hole. You get in some extra shots and you just eventually shoot yourself out of it.

On the team's ball movement:
Obviously, the ball movement is important. Whenever we share the ball we make a good percentage of shots because there is a big difference in shooting a shot that you are open and shooting the ball with a hand in your face. The ability to play out of our defense and our ability to get our hands on a lot of balls tonight just created offense for us and once we started moving the ball, along with player movement, we had hard cuts to the basket and that let us hit a lot of good shots.

SAN ANTONIO FORWARD SHENISE JOHNSON:
On the Fever's team's defense:
That is one of the things we have been focusing on and we know we have not been playing our best basketball coming back from the break. So we told ourselves that we are going to focus on the things we can control and one them is getting in the gym and focusing on our defensive energy.
