“It was a good basketball game. The teams look fairly similar when I look at the box. I’m real proud of our ability to hang in there with them. They (Sparks) execute offensively very good. We had to deal with a team that spreads us out. I thought that we had pockets of good play. Then we went big. It was the first time that we have gone big on the floor. They did a good job. I also thought that Ruth Riley in the second half was a real catalyst to what we did. Jia Perkins just had a marvelous game. We rode her through most of the game. Becky (Hammon) was good, Sophia (Young) finished strong. The unsung hero was Ruth Riley. Watching her offensively and defensively in the second half gave us the motivation. It’s a good win for us and now we have to move on to Atlanta and play them in 36 hours."
“I just came into the game with the mindset that I was going to attack. I just wanted to get my shot off or find teammates. Whatever it was I just wanted to be aggressive. Early on the shots started falling so it makes is more comfortable for you to keep shooting. Our defensive stops lead to easy buckets for us in the transition. It was an all around good game for us defensively, besides the first quarter.”
“They (Sparks) put a lot of pressure on us. We had to do a lot of things right down the stretch. When they made good hard runs at us, it was a battle back and forth. Really we don’t expect anything less from LA. We know that they’re super talented team. We just wanted to hang in there and give ourselves a chance to win down the stretch and that’s what we did. I thought Ruth came up with some huge plays defensively. Then she had that stretch in the third quarter where she just made shots and she kept us in the ballgame. She was huge for us offensively and defensively. Her smarts on the basketball court you can’t really see that on the box sheet."
|Sparks Head Coach Jennifer Gillom|
“We’re failing our road test right now. We first lost to Minnesota, then our next game here we lost, but I think even though we have lost we are learning from it. I think we have gotten better from the last loss on the road. I thought that San Antonio really capitalized off of our turnovers tonight and I think that was a difference in the game. I mean we had the same rebounds, shooting percentage was probably the same, everything the same, except we just didn’t take care of the ball. When you’re on the road you have to take care of the ball. Of course, I didn’t think we did a good job on Jia Perkins tonight. I thought she really played awesome and that probably was the difference in the game.”
(Speaking about the defense on the late two late three pointers to close out the game)
- “Those were some very key three pointers, we kind of over played her a little bit. We tried to deny her the ball, which I thought she did a good job of reading the defense and just flared on us and shot a great three. Also, they have some great shooters and it gets difficult to try and change up your defensive scheme when you have a lot of great shooters on your team. I thought they kept their composure even though we took the lead in the beginning. It’s going to be some good games between us for sure.”
I thought we started very well. We were great on both ends of the floor and I think our defense was really the thing that set the tone for us offensively. Then come second half, all the events turned for the worse. We started turning the ball over, not really executing, allowed them to get back in the game and they would get the lead again. Then come overtime, it’s like we just fell apart. We had crucial turnovers, we only scored two points and it was off of Candace’s free throws. ”
(Did the referee’s have anything to do with the outcome of the game?) - “I think the refs did a good job, especially in the first half of the game for both teams. Then in the second half, things just became a little different. We had some questionable calls with some flopping. But, what can you do? They work hard just like we do and you just hope they see what you see.”
(Was it a tough loss tonight?) - “Yea, we had the game. We were up by like 4 or 5 with two minutes left in the game and then I think we just didn’t execute offensively or defensively down the stretch.”
(What was the cause on the many turnovers late in the game?) - “It’s just taking care off the ball on the road. Coming off of them tying it in regulation, I think we were still hung up on that and not really focused on overtime as much. We started off overtime with a turnover and came down and got a stop, and then turned the ball over again. So, it’s key to take care of the ball, especially on the road.”
