UNCASVILLE, CT – With the third overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, presented by State Farm, the San Antonio Stars selected guard Kayla McBride from the University of Notre Dame. The Stars also selected center Astou Ndour (16th overall) and forward Bri Kulas (28th overall).

A 5-11 guard from Notre Dame, McBride led the Irish to an NCAA runner-up finish this season, falling only to UCONN in the championship game. During her collegiate career she led Notre Dame to four Final Fours and three title games. Following her 2013-14 season, she was named a First-Team All American, a Naismith Trophy finalist and a finalist for the Wade Trophy. She was named the ACC player of the year following her senior season after she averaged 17.6 points per game. She averaged 14.1 points per game over her four-year career at Notre Dame.

“Kayla is a player that brings so much to the table,” said Stars Head Coach and General Manager Dan Hughes. “We went into this draft looking to take the best player and we felt we did. This is a player, who from an offensive perspective has so much versatility to what she can do for us. She is a premier shooter, she has a strong mid-range game and she’s a two-to-one passer. She has size and is a good rebounder, which is a unique set for the WNBA. It is something we couldn’t pass up.”

“I’m just excited,” said McBride. “I know I am going to a great program with a great coach and great players, and I’m just ready for the next chapter.”

A 6-6 center from Spain, Ndour was born in Senegal and has been playing with Gran Canaria since 2010. In 25 games with Gran Canaria during the 2013-14 season, Ndour averaged 17.3 points and 13.1 rebounds in 36.2 minutes. The 19-year old was named the 2013 Young Women’s Player of the Year by FIBA Europe, averaging 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds over the course of the 2012-13 season. In the 2013 U-20 FIBA European Championships she averaged 17.3 points and 9.8 rebounds in 26 minutes for the Spanish U-20 national team.

“Astou is a talent that, down the road, everyone will understand very quickly why we drafted her,” Hughes said. “This is a supremely talented player with an awful lot of potential to be one of the best players in the world.”

Kulas is a 6-1 forward who finished her career at Missouri with over 1,000 points scored. The Kansas native ranks among the school’s top 10 in career rebounding, three-point field goal percentage and free-throw percentage. She was named to the Coaches All-SEC First Team following her senior season when she averaged 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in 28.6 minutes.

“We are very impressed with the package Bri will bring to training camp and she is going to compete very favorably to make the team,” Hughes said.
