Stars Abroad: A look at how San Antonio Stars players faired in their recent games overseas

Select Stars players have continued to improve their game by playing overseas during the WNBA offseason. Below is a recap on how some of the San Antonio players have performed in their most recent games.


Jayne Appel – Liaoning (China)

Stars center, Jayne Appel, continued her impressive play in China, leading Liaoning to a 95-77 victory over Yunnan on January 25th. The Stanford alum scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for yet another double-double overseas. Appel was seven of eleven from the floor and five of six from the charity stripe. Appel is now averaging 24.6 points per game and is leading the league with 11.8 rebounds per game.


Chelsea Hopkins – Bnot Hertzeliya (Israel)

Chelsea Hopkins recorded impressive stats, but couldn’t help her team to victory in Hertzeliya’s 76-83 loss to Elitzur Ramia in Israel on January 23rd. The Stars guard scored 18 points on five of 12 shooting, including three buckets from beyond the arc. Hopkins grabbed 10 rebounds to lead her to a double-double, while also collecting four assists and four steals. She ranks second in both assists per game (6.1) and steals per game (2.6) in the Israeli league.

Shenise Johnson – Istanbul University (Turkey)

In a lopsided matchup in the Turkish league, Shenise Johnson and Istanbul University defeated Ted Ankara 90-66 on January 25th. Johnson scored 18 points on seven of 13 shooting, while adding five rebounds, six assists and three steals. Johnson has now scored in double figures in two of her last three games in Turkey.

Kayla Alexander – Energy Ivanovo (Russia)

Over in Russia, Stars center Kayla Alexander put in a valiant effort for Energy Ivanovo in their 67-62 win over Dynamo Moscow on January 26th. Alexander scored 20 points on seven of 11 shooting (as well as six of 10 from the free throw line). The Syracuse grad also grabbed 11 rebounds and collected three steals in the win. Alexander now ranks fourth in the Russian League with 15.1 points per game and fifth with 8.3 rebounds per game.

Shameka Christon – Zamarat (Spain)

Stars forward, Shameka Christon, scored 24 points including a whopping six three-pointers in Zamarat’s 70-56 win over Cadi ICG in Spain on January 25th. Christon added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the victory. She has now scored in double figures in her last three starts overseas.
