Silver Stars Select Kayla Alexander with the No. 8 Pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft
SAN ANTONIO – With the eighth overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm, the San Antonio Silver Stars selected center Kayla Alexander from Syracuse University. The Silver Stars also selected Davellyn Whyte (16th overall), Diandra Tchatchouang (20th overall) and Whitney Hand (32nd overall).
“With us drafting in a higher draft position, one of the things we wanted to do was look for players that could develop into good pros and could also meet a need with this team,” head coach and general manager Dan Hughes said. “We’re faced with Sophia’s injury, so in playing with 10 it was crucial to get players who are versatile and could compete for spots on this team. We accomplished that and were also able to get quality people that will understand and add to the Silver Star culture.”
A 6-4 center, Alexander finished her Syracuse career as the all-time leader in points (2,024), blocks (350), field goals (736), free throws made (552), free throws attempted (750) and games played (140). An honorable mention All-American and three-time All-BIG EAST selection, Alexander led all active BIG EAST players with 31 career double-doubles in 2012-13, finishing as the conference leader in blocks (94) and offensive rebounds (151). She also owns the Syracuse single-season marks in scoring (573, 2012-13), field goals (151, 2012-13) and blocks (96, 2011-12), and ranked 19th nationally in blocks per game (2.6) as a junior.
“I just have to give all the glory to God right now,” Alexander said. “I’m extremely blessed, I’m thrilled and I’m just excited to be part of the San Antonio Silver Stars.”
A 5-11 guard from the University of Arizona, White finished her collegiate career as the second all-time leading scorer in program history. She started all 126 games of her collegiate career, notching 100 double-digit scoring performances and 12 double-doubles while posting the first triple-double in Arizona women’s basketball history. She finished her collegiate career ranking among the top 10 on 14 Arizona career record lists including second in three-pointers made (274) and steals (266) and third in field goals made (666), scoring average (16.3) and minutes per game average (33.7).
“I don’t think I can put how I’m feeling into words right now,” Whyte said. “It just shows that hard work really does pay off in the end and I’m just really, really excited to get started.”
A 6-2 forward from La Courneuve, France, Tchatchouang played one season at the University of Maryland in 2010, earning ACC All-Freshman Team recognition before being sidelined by a knee injury. She has since played professionally in France, most recently with Perpignan Basket, where she averaged 9.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game through 27 French League games in 2012-13. She was named to the French National Team following the 2012 Olympics.
A redshirt senior from the University of Oklahoma, Hand played in 95 career games for the Sooners, averaging 11.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game during her collegiate career. The 2008-09 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Hand was sidelined by an ACL tear five games into her sophomore season. She averaged 12.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in her return as a redshirt sophomore in 2010-11 and was named to the All-Big 12 First Team in 2012 after averaging career-highs in points per game (13.3) and rebounds (7.1). She sustained an ACL tear in December, ending her collegiate career.
“I am extremely thankful and grateful to the organization for considering me given my circumstances,” Hand said. “I know San Antonio has a great staff and group of players and I look forward to the opportunity to work with them in the future.”
