Young and Robinson Complete Euro Tour

Silver Stars guard Danielle Robinson and forward Sophia Young wrapped up their Team USA European Tour experience last week. The women’s senior national team went 1-2 during its final three games to finish its five-game exhibition schedule with a 3-2 record.

Team USA endured its first loss of the tour against Ros Casares Valencia, 80-76, on October 5 at the Fuente San Luis Municipal Arena in Valencia, Spain. Young was second on the team with 12 points while adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals in the loss. Robinson had four points, two assists and three rebounds in her finale with the national team. She averaged 5.0 points per game through three games before leaving to join Israel’s Maccabi Ramat Hen for her European season.

“I thought today we came out a little bit dead, a little bit slow, so they came out on top throughout the beginning of the game and the second half,” Young said following the loss. “That’s something that we have to learn. We have to start the game better. Whether it’s the beginning of the game or going into the second half of the game. They’re a great team, so we have to give them credit. We have a lot of individual good players on this team, but we still have to work on playing well together.”

The tour continued in Prague, where Team USA was outscored 19-8 in the third quarter, resulting in a 83-77 loss to 2011 Czech League champion USK Prague. Young had three points in the loss. Young and Team USA finished the tour with a win, defeating UNIQA-Euroleasing Sopron in Sopron, Hungary on Sunday, October 9. Young ranked second on the team with 12 points in the win while adding eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. She finished the tour averaging 8.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

“What I’ve learned is about the intensity of USA Basketball,” Young said at the conclusion of the tour. “It’s obviously the best team in the world and everybody is out to get USA Basketball. In order to make this team, every night you have to show up. Every night you have to give your best game. Every night you have to do all the little things in order to make a team. Coach said it best, you don’t have to score 20 or 30 points, but you have to do the little things in order to win the game.”
