SASilverStars.com checked in on our Silver Stars overseas as most have opened their respective offseason game schedules.
Danielle Adams – GMA Pozzuoli lost to Lucca, 59-48, in its season opener on Oct. 16, but rebounded with a 62-59 victory against Basket Parma on Oct. 23. Adams did not play in either game. Next Game: Sunday, Oct. 30 vs. Liomatic Umbertide
Jayne Appel – Appel and Samsun opened their 2011 season against Roneeka Hodges and Istanbul Universitesi on Oct. 22. Istanbul owned a two-point lead at halftime, but Samsun owned a 43-24 second-half scoring advantage to earn a 70-53 victory. Appel started at center for Samsun, leading the team with 11 rebounds while adding two points and a block. Next Game: Sunday, Oct. 30 vs. Antakya
“It was a thrill to be able to see Ronnie and play against her over here in Turkey,” Appel said. “It is always a little strange to play against a teammate for the first time, but I really enjoyed the experience. We went out to eat after and got to catch up, which was also great.”
Both Appel and Hodges were unharmed in the earthquake that hit Turkey over the weekend as it was about five hours from where they were located.
Becky Hammon – Hammon and Spartak V MR have played five games to date – three domestic league contests and two EuroLeague games – holding a 4-1 overall record. Spartak V MR is undefeated in domestic league play, defeating Energy Ivanovo (86-45), Dynamo M. (90-58) and Chevakata (75-65). Hammon is averaging 20.0 points per game in domestic league play, shooting 52 percent from the floor with averages of 2.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest.
In EuroLeague play, Spartak V MR defeated the Czech Republic’s Frisco Brno, 87-70, and fell to Poland’s Wisla Can-Pack, 62-74. Hammon is averaging nine points per game with 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in EuroLeague play. Next Game: Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Rivas Ecopolis (EuroLeague)
Roneeka Hodges – Hodges paired three points with three rebounds while adding a block, a steal and an assist in the 53-70 loss to Appel and Samsun. Next Game: Sunday, Oct. 30 vs. Tarsus Bld
The anticipated games for Jia Perkins, Porsha Phillips and Danielle Robinson – who are all playing in Israel – were cancelled due to Israeli players being on strike. The next anticipated games are Monday, Oct. 31 pending resolution to the Israeli work stoppage.
Ruth Riley – Riley made her way overseas to China on Sunday. She and Liaoning are set to open their short schedule – which runs from November through the beginning of January – on Nov. 5.
