Eight members of the 2011 San Antonio Silver Stars have signed to play overseas during the WNBA offseason. From October through April, SASilverStars.com will be keeping up with our Silver Stars around the world with bi-weekly written updates.
While many Silver Stars have already made their way overseas, the remainder as scheduled to depart at the end of the week.
Rookie forward Danielle Adams will depart for Italy at the end of the week, following a visit to the White House as part of Texas A&M Women’s Basketball’s National Championship recognition. Adams has signed with G.M.A Pozzuoli of Italy’s premier league, located in Naples, Italy. G.M.A Pozzuoli most recently participated in an unscored scrimmage against the U.S. Women’s Senior National Team as part of the European Tour on Oct. 3, 2011. A member of the 2011 WNBA All-Rookie Team, Adams ranked third on the team with 12.4 points per game and added 4.3 rebounds per game despite missing 11 games due to a mid-foot sprain. She earned Rookie of the Month honors for June and was named to the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game as a reserve. G.M.A. Pozzuoli begins its season against Lucca on October 16.
Center Jayne Appel will play her first overseas season in 2011-12 with the Turkish club Samsun located on the Black Sea Coast. Samsun finished the 2010-11 season with a 9-15 overall record and was the Turkish League (TBBL) regular season runner-up and advanced to the TBBL semifinals in 2009. The team qualified in the 2009-10 Eurocup, finishing fourth in Group H. Appel averaged 3.2 points per game and ranked second on the team with 4.6 rebounds per game in 2011. She joins Washington’s Kelly Miller on the 2011-12 Samsun roster. Appel and Samsun will begin the season against Istanbul Universitesi SK on October 22.
Guard Becky Hammon will return to Russia to play for Spartak, based in Vidnoye, Russia. Spartak won the EuroLeague Women Championship in 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 and is the only team that has won four-consecutive EuroLeague titles since 1991. Hammon played for Nadezhda Orenburg during the 2010-11 offseason, averaging 12.7 points, 5.1 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Named one of the Top 15 Players in WNBA history during the 2011 season, Hammon was also selected to the 2011 WNBA All-Star for the seventh time in her 13-year career. She also became the seventh player in league history to reach the 5,000 point plateau, leading the Silver Stars with 15.9 points per game and 5.8 assists per game during the regular season. Hammon will join Minnesota’s Seimone Augustus and Phoenix’s Candice Dupree on the Spartak roster. Spartak is scheduled to begin its 2011-12 season against Energy Ivanovo on October 8.
Guard Roneeka Hodges will join Hondarribia-Irun based in Hondarribia, Spain. Hondarribia-Irun finished tied for seventh in the Spanish premier league standings in 2010-11, with an 11-15 overall record. Hondarribia-Irun qualified for Eurocup action in three-consecutive seasons from 2005-06 through 2007-08. Hodges averaged 3.9 points per game and 1.3 rebounds while leading the team in free throw percentage (1.000) and ranking second in three-point field goal percentage (40.0) in 2011. Hondarribia-Irun is scheduled to tip off the season against Gran Canaria on October 15.
Guard Jia Perkins will play for Israel’s Ramat Hasharon alongside forward Porsha Phillips. Ramat Hasharon finished second in the Israeli league in 2010-11, with a 13-5 record. The team has won four Israeli League regular-season titles (2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010) and four Israeli League championships (2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010). Perkins ranked fourth on the team in 2011 with 12.0 points per game while adding 3.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals. Phillips – the only third round draft pick to make a WNBA team in 2011 – averaged 1.8 points per game, 1.9 rebounds per game. Perkins and Phillips will play alongside Alysha Clark – who joined the Silver Stars in training camp in 2010 and 2011 – and Connecticut’s Jessica Breland. Ramat Hasharon is scheduled to tip-off the season against B.C. Habikaa on October 17.
Forward/center Ruth Riley will spend the 2011-12 offseason in China for the first time in her career, playing with the club Liaoning. Liaoning finished fourth in the Chinese league standings last season with a 14-8 record. Riley averaged 4.8 points per game with 1.5 rebounds and a team-best 0.88 blocks per game for the Silver Stars in 2011 and was named the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award winner.
Rookie guard Danielle Robinson is scheduled to join Israel’s Maccabi Ramat Hen tomorrow, following her week and a half with the U.S. Women’s Senior National Team on their European Tour. Ramat Hen finished fourth in the Israeli League standings in 2010-11 with a 12-6 record and advanced to the Israeli League semifinals. A unanimous 2011 WNBA All-Rookie Team selection, Robinson averaged 8.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while ranking second on the team with 3.9 assists per game in 2011. Maccabi Ramat Hen is scheduled to open its season on October 24 against Hapoel T-A.
