Parker Nominated for ESPY

LOS ANGELES – Sparks forward/center Candace Parker has been nominated for an ESPY in the ‘Best WNBA Player’ category, it was the announced by ESPN.

In 2012, Parker averaged 17.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in the regular season helping the Sparks to a 24-10 record.

The ESPYs will be held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 17 at 6:00 p.m. PT. The award show is hosted by actor Jon Hamm and will air on ESPN. Winners are decided by fans, who can vote at now through the start of the show on July 17.

Parker is nominated along with Tameka Catchings (Indiana Fever), Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun), Angel McCoughtry (Atlanta Dream) and Lindsay Whalen (Minnesota Lynx). Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury has won “Best WNBA Player’ for the past three years.

Parker has won three ESPY’s in years past, taking home ‘Best WNBA Player’ in 2009 as well as ‘Best Female Athlete’ and ‘Best Female College Athlete’ honors in 2008 for her final season at the University of Tennessee. Before Parker, Lisa Leslie was the last Sparks player to be recognized in the WNBA category in 2007.

Phoenix’s Brittney Griner is nominated in the ‘Best Female Athlete’ and ‘Best Female College Athlete’ categories, which she received in 2012 also.

The Sparks return to STAPLES Center for a three-game homestand, beginning with the Minnesota Lynx on July 2 at 7:30 p.m. Next week also includes a Fourth of July matchup with the New York Liberty and Latina Celebration Night against the San Antonio Silver Stars on July 6.  Tickets are available now by calling 877-44-SPARKS (772757) or visiting
