LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Sparks have hired Steve Smith as an assistant coach, it was announced today by Sparks head coach Jennifer Gillom. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smith, 46, rejoins the Sparks sideline after working with the organization during both the 1998 and 2009 seasons. He has over twenty years of coaching experience at the high school, college and professional level after spending seven years as the head men's basketball coach at Dominican College of San Rafael and five years in the WNBA with Phoenix, Los Angeles and Detroit.

"I have known Steve since my playing days and couldn't be happier to now work with him to bring a championship back to LA," said head coach Jennifer Gillom. "I have always admired and respected Steve for his scouting abilities and development of players. He brings an incredible amount of knowledge about the game of basketball, the league and the players on our team."

His impressive WNBA career began in 1997 with the Phoenix Mercury when he helped guide the team to a first place finish in the West and a spot in the first ever WNBA Championship game. He then joined the Los Angeles Sparks in 1998 before heading to Detroit from 1999-2001. During his stint with Detroit, the Shock made their first trip to the WNBA playoffs in 1999.

"I am happy and elated to have this opportunity to stay with the organization and work with the players," said Smith. "I have known Jennifer for 10 years and she's a remarkable coach who is also an amazing person with incredible talent. I am honored and privileged to be able to work with her again and to give her as much assistance as I can and as she needs from me."

In 2000, Smith took over the reigns as head coach of the Windward School girls basketball team and has since guided them to a 200-61 record and nine league titles in 10 seasons. Their most successful season was in 2006 when he led them to a CIF championship and they were a California State Championship finalist.

The Los Angeles native began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania in 1988 and has since worked with various teams as an assistant and head coach and WNBA and NBA advance scout.
