Sparks Sign Free Agent Forward LaToya Thomas
EL SEGUNDO- The Los Angeles Sparks have signed
free agent forward LaToya Thomas, it was announced by General Manager Penny
Toler. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Thomas is entering her fifth season in the WNBA. She played the last three seasons with the San Antonio Silver Stars after being selected by San Antonio with the third overall pick in the 2004 Dispersal Draft. She had six 20-plus point games in her first season with the Silver Stars. She averaged 8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 19 games last season.
Originally selected by the Cleveland Rockers with the first overall selection in the 2003 WNBA Draft, Thomas was the Rockersí single-season rookie leader in rebounding with 164 and ranked second on the Rockersí single-season rookie scoring list with 347 points. In her career, she has appeared in 63 games, including 55 starts, averaging 12.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 28.8 minutes per game. She started all three playoff games for the Rockers in 2003 against Detroit, averaging 13.7 points and 7.7 rebounds.
A four-time Kodak All-American at Mississippi State, Thomas led the Southeastern Conference in scoring all four years and finished in seventh place on the NCAA career scoring list. She was the SEC Player of the Year in 2003 and was a finalist for the Naismith Award three times. She was named to the Mississippi State honor roll in her junior and seniors years while majoring in educational psychology.
