DeLisha Visits the NBA Store in New York

Fresh-faced and bright-eyed, Sparks forward DeLisha Milton-Jones stopped by the NBA Store in New York to read the book “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss to 50 kids from the Harlem Children’s Zone on Wednesday, July 8th. Having just hopped off a plane the night before, Milton-Jones got up the next morning to spend a couple hours with kids in the community.

“It was great to go out and spend time with these kids,” said Milton-Jones. “I was surprised at how well they read and how knowledgeable they were on “Going Green.”

When she arrived, she was escorted upstairs through the back so she could make her entrance. Former New York Liberty center, Kym Hampton was already there and introduced DeLisha to the kids. After thunderous applause, DeLisha and Kym began taking turns reading to the kids right at center court in the NBA Store. Once they were finished reading the book, the kids participated in a Q&A about the book and were awarded with prizes from DeLisha if they answered correctly.

“I really enjoyed this event and am glad I had the opportunity to do it,” said DeLisha. “We came in a couple days early so that gave me the time I needed to be here for the kids. I think that as a role model, it’s important to do as much as you can.” The kids enjoyed their time with the star as well; they were smiling ear to ear during the whole program and were delighted when called on to answer to questions.

The event was centered on the WNBA’s league-wide initiative to Go Green during the week of July 9th-July 16th. DeLisha was decked out in the WNBA Go Green t-shirt and was on hand to not only read the book and participate in prize giveaways but to also talk about being environmentally conscious. A representative from the Natural Resources Defense Council was also on hand to talk about the importance of protecting wildlife and ensuring a healthy and safe environment for all life on earth.

The Harlem Children’s Zone is a non-profit organization that works to enhance the quality of life for the children and families in the programs. Each youth participant received a t-shirt, giftbag and autograph from DeLisha and Kym after the event.
