Sky Win ’07 Pre-Season Opener

The 2007 Chicago Sky took the court for the first time this season, opening their pre-season schedule at home with a win against the Phoenix Mercury, 89-69.

Sky 2006 All-Star Candice Dupree led all scorers with 17 points. The Mercury played without their two stars, Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter.

“We have to be realistic about this situation, we won by 20, but they were missing a lot of people,” said Dupree about the win.

The Mercury closed the 1st quarter out leading by 9 points, 24-15, and it appeared that things were not going to be too sunny for the Sky.

Sky guard Stacey Dales knocked down a three pointer to give the Sky a 27-26 lead early in the 2nd quarter and the team never trailed again.

“We got off to a rough start,” said Dupree.“But we pulled it together.”

The Sky’s rookies played several minutes, working hard to prove to Head Coach Bo Overton that they deserve a spot on the team.

“They are making it hard on us to make these cuts because they are playing so well,” said Overton.

Christina Quaye led all rookies in scoring with 13 points. She also had a game high 8 rebounds.

Stephanie Raymond, the Sky’s second round pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft, proved to be a spark plug off the bench, scoring 5 points and dishing out 3 assists.

“It was really fun to get her turned loose,” said Overton. “They have some quick players and I wanted to see how she would handle it.”

First round draft pick Armintie Price struggled in her first game in the WNBA, scoring only 3 points in 14 minutes of play.

The Sky shot a scorching 81.3% (26 of 32) from the free throw line.

Overton had this to say about his first ever WNBA win. “Anytime that you go into something, you want to get better. We did some good things tonight.”
