Ruth Riley pledges “No Kid Hungry

I was first introduced to Share Our Strength this Feb (2012) at the NBA All-Star Jam Session. They had a booth set up by the basketball clinic that I was helping out with. I stopped by the booth to make the "No Kid Hungry" pledge and I talked with them and found out that they were launching the Illinois Initiative in March and volunteered to help out in any way I could and they asked if I would be willing to speak at their official launch in Illinois.

As I was preparing to speak at the launch, I did a little more research and realized that my passion for the campaign went beyond my initial desire to help kids in need, the basic storyline read through the fabric of parts of my childhood. As a professional athlete, I recognize we have an unbelievable platform to positively impact the lives of others and this was something that I felt I had to be involved in and had to use my platform to help in any way possible.

This summer I participated in a variety of activities on behalf of the “No Kid Hungry” campaign. I was able to visit the Greater Chicago Food Depository and travel with them on their summer bus tour helping deliver free meals to children across the south-side of Chicago. I met with Chef Jared VanCamp at Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation event at Navy Pier, recorded a national PSA talking about the importance of SNAP, and most recently had the opportunity to speak at a fundraiser at the Everest Restaurant for No Kid Hungry and shared how my life has been personally touched as a kid by the provision of this campaign.

There are numerous ways people can get involved and help out to raise awareness and funds for the campaign, from volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, making food and/or monetary donations, conducting fundraisers like Cooking Matter's bake sales, and during the month of September, which is hunger awareness month, thousands of restaurants gave people the opportunity to make a difference by simply eating at their favorite dining spot!!
