IN to the SKY
Hitting the Road

Following a spirited morning practice, the team jumped on the bus to head to the airport for the Sky’s first road trip of the season.
Traveling to New Jersey, the team faces not only a tough Liberty squad that won each of the games it hosted versus the Sky last year, but also the looming deadline of May 17 when final rosters are due.
Gone is 6-2 power forward Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton and now the team stands at fourteen players. Not surprisingly Lindsay was immediately picked up by the Washington Mystics, which says a lot about the battle to make Chicago’s roster this season.
Noticeably absent from the first leg of this road trip are Swin Cash and Sylvia Fowles, who are finishing up their Team USA duties in Seattle before heading to Minnesota to meet the team on Monday night. According to Pokey this is a perfect opportunity to get the rookies more reps in live competition.
While Sonja Petrovic is still not expected to play while her broken finger heals, both Shey Peddy and Sydney Carter will likely see a lot of action. The two diminutive guards have been given long looks at shooting guard as Vandersloot and Penicheiro have taken the majority of the reps at point. Despite having to match up with guards that are sometimes six or seven inches taller than her, Carter remains confident as she told me that while they may have the advantage on the inside, she has the advantage on the outside.
Starting in the place of the Olympic stars will be Le’coe Willingham who arrived on Wednesday and the versatile Shay Murphy, who will line up at small forward. Sloot and Prince will start at guard and Ruth Riley will slide over to the middle.
Willingham, who was a late arrival to camp due to her playoff schedule in Europe, immediately fit in to the flow of the Sky system. According to Jeff House, it has been easy for her to adjust. “Le’coe is a very smart player,” he said. “She understands the concepts we use and was able to get right in and execute.” Le’coe will make her Sky debut tomorrow.
Check in to “IN to the Sky” later in the week for more details of our first road trip of the season.
