High School Team of the Week February 5, 2008- Galena

The Chicago Sky congratulates the Galena High School girls varsity basketball team, which has been named the eighth “High School Team of the Week.” Although the Pirates have struggled on the court, their off-court activities make them winners and are building their program for future seasons.

Under the leadership of head coach Jim Rigdon, the Pirates have participated in and organized several fundraisers for the Galena community. From volunteering with the Special Olympics to holding a Free-Throw-a-thon for the Galena Police Department’s Christmas Fund, the Pirates players and coaches understand and exhibit the positive attitude needed to be successful. These off-the-court activities have triggered a surge in girls participating in the basketball program, which has nearly doubled over the past year. Outside of community service, the Pirates have spent their free time attending college games and learning ways they can improve. The Pirates were nominated by one of their teachers, because “they have demonstrated that basketball programs are still about friendship, having fun, working hard and making a difference on the court and off.”

The Sky wishes the Galena High School Pirates the best of luck in the upcoming seasons and thanks them for their generous commitment to their community and high school.
