Chicago Cruises In San Antonio

The Sky wrapped up a two-game road trip with a 70-60 win in San Antonio, bringing them back to .500 on the season (4-4) after a 66-80 loss in Phoenix on June 7. It was the Sky’s first franchise win over the Silver Stars.

Sky forward Candice Dupree returned to form after being held to 6 points in Phoenix. She led all scorers with 22 points and 8 rebounds. In her first start for the Sky, Chasity Melvin earned her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Sky forward Stacey Dales returned to the starting lineup, contributing 10 points, 9 of them on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. Jia Perkins added 10 points.

Becky Hammon led San Antonio with 20 points. Sophia Young had 15 points and Erin Buescher, starting for the injured Ruth Riley, scored 15 points.

The Sky led most of the way, taking a 32-24 lead into halftime. Dupree wasn’t happy, though: “We didn’t take care of the ball. San Antonio scored almost half of their first half points off of our turnovers. Luckily we were able to outscore them and got a few good rebounds.”

Rookie Armintie Price had a strong third quarter, staving off the loss of momentum that has bedeviled the team after the half in previous games. She picked up all of her 7 points in the third quarter and 6 of her 9 rebounds, out-rebounding every player on the court.

San Antonio closed to within three points in the fourth quarter, but the Sky answered with an 18-4 run.

“We just kept trying,” said Dupree. “San Antonio’s guards put a lot of pressure on us, but we just kept trying and overcame their defense, and we didn’t give up.”

The Sky returns home to Chicago for two home games, the first against Seattle at 7pm on Tuesday, June 12. The game can be heard live on WVON 1690AM.
