Shock Head Coach Bill Laimbeer

On the game:
" We talked about how it was going to be a defensive series, a knock down defense. We played our way through foul trouble. We worked through it and kept our composure. At the end, we made some big plays and Katie (Smith) hit the big three. Katie wants to guard anybody. She will even guard centers. We got our offensive and defensive rebounds. Katie has the brains to keep up focused."

On playing defense against Tamika Catchings:
"We tried to stay in front of her and we always had help, help, help. She will get her touches."

Shock Guard Deanna Nolan

On the coach’s guarantee of a win:
"I think it pumps us up and gives us more confidence, makes us more focused and intense. But at the same time, we’re not really thinking about it. We’re trying to limit the little things, like turnovers, allowing second shots and just play hard."

Does the team have a lack of focus?
"Not on occasion, but at times we have lapses. We try to make passes that are not there. Tonight, we made bad passes and didn’t do the little things that let them take the lead at one point."

Fever Head Coach Brian Winters

On the game:
“Detroit was the better team tonight. They made more shots. Their guards hurt us. Katie Smith was key late. You can’t shoot 33% and win. The team that rebounds will probably win the game. We must focus on the next game. We win that and the series is tied 1-1 and anything can happen. We must get more scoring out of our guards. We will look at the film for mismatches and go from there."

Fever Forward Tamika Catchings

What did you see in the 13-0 run?
“We had defensive breakdowns. We weren’t able to score on the offensive end. We didn’t execute our game play down the stretch.”

On the next game:
“We have to focus. We were ready to play tonight, but we didn’t come with a championship mentality. O. (Olympia Scott) talked to us in the locker room at the end of the game. She said we didn’t take care of every possession. We have to dig down deep, put everything else aside and we can win at the Palace.”
