    Shock Head Coach Bill Laimbeer

“We knew that this was going to be an ugly basketball game because we didn’t care how pretty we looked, we didn’t care if we ran the ball. We cared about rebounding and about defense and we learned a very good lesson from the referees’ today. We have gotten away from being a physical basketball team from last year and we found it again tonight.”

About being happy with the rebounds and defense:
“We talked about it a lot. We were able to go out there and exert our will and our size and strength advantage. We didn’t give them very many good shots and we hounded everyone and used our size. I think this was the most physical game we have played all year long.”

“This gives us a win. We are taking it one game at a time right now and we aren’t looking past anything. This was a win against a team we play two more times but was in front of us.”

    Shock Forward Swin Cash

“We knew that we needed to start boxing out. People have just been jumping over our backs and out jumping us. We just really wanted to focus on that.”

“There was a look on people’s faces. It was serious, it wasn’t little business. We knew what this game meant, we didn’t come out flat. We just kept it the whole time. We went through a little wall today and we just kept saying to ourselves ‘We are not losing this game period.’ The whole game we just kept saying it.”

    Shock Center Ruth Riley

“This win gives us momentum. We are playing hard and aggressive and we are getting after it. We need this to carry over to tomorrow’s game as well.”

“Charlotte is a team is just going to lay back and execute their offense. We really concentrated on limiting them to one shot and step up our defense and we were able to do that tonight.”

    Sting Head Coach Trudi Lacey

“The difference was in the rebounding. Detroit had 19 offensive rebounds and we couldn’t put the ball in the ocean. Except for our rebounding, our defense wasn’t that bad, we didn’t finish it with box outs, which is something we had talked about. Something we had not been doing well. Offensively we had some open shots we just didn’t knock them down.”

    On why they weren’t scoring:
“I think you’d have to ask them that. (Laughing) I wasn’t out their shooting. All I can do is draw up the plays. We got open looks, and to win ball games you got to knock shots down..”

On still being in the race in the division:
“Yeah, we definitely got to stop the bleeding. This is a very tough stretch for us. We got seven out of ten games away. Play 17 and home and play 17 away. We just got to regroup and go out and get Washington tomorrow.”

    Sting Guard Dawn Staley

On having a season-high five assists:
“The stat line doesn’t matter when we don’t get the win.”

On what the difficulties were in the second half:
“The second half was alright. It was the end of the first half that shot us in the foot. We didn’t respond well, we didn’t attack the way we were supposed to in the last four minutes of the half. It put us in a hole and we couldn’t ever get out. I think out second half was aggressive. I thought we matched up, we just couldn’t get it done.”
