Remarkably enough, the WNBA all-time career playoff assist leaders are still very much active and will be looking to widen their lead over the field this postseason. After all, the deeper they go into the playoffs, the more assists they can rack up.
Sparks reserve point guard Teresa Weatherspoon holds the assist record with 185 over her seven-year career. However, all of those came as a member of the New York Liberty. T-Spoon's new teammate, Nikki Teasley, a two-time WNBA champion, is second with 118. Teasley and the Sparks would love nothing more than to help the veteran Weatherspoon get that elusive title.
Third on the all-time list is another eight-year WNBA veteran, Liberty guard Vickie Johnson. Johnson's Liberty face the defending champion Detroit Shock in the first round. The Sparks open up their Western Conference title defense against the last team they beat in the playoffs, the Sacramento Monarchs.
The players who rank fourth and fifth on the all-time list, Cynthia Cooper with 94 and Sheryl Swoopes with 82, will not have a chance to build on their totals. At least not in 2004.
